ARTIST PENCIL SIGNED: TOSHI YOSHIDA. Toshi Yoshida was a Japanese printmaker and painter. He is best known for his association with the sosaku-hanga movement in the early 20th century. The movements principles involved the idea that a single artist would draw, carve, and print his own works, rather than dividing the tasks for assistants to carry out. Born on July 25, 1911 in Tokyo, Japan, his father was the famed landscape artist Hiroshi Yoshida. Toshi learned much of his technique from his father and at 19 went on a sketching trip to India and Southeast Asia with him. In 1950, after the death his father, Toshi distinguished himself by creating abstract works for the first time. It was an easyI suppose inevitablestep to abstraction, but it was a step my father could never approve, he said of his work. Still I could not ignore the movement of the times and I began to break away from my former realistic approach. He went on to make over 300 of these non-objective woodblock prints. The artist died at 93 years old on July 1, 1995 in Tokyo, Japan. His works are in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Toshi Yoshida (1911 – 1995). Toshi Yoshida (1911 – 1995) Bird in Autumn Birds of the Seasons Series Woodblock 27 x 19 inches (frame) 20 x 12 inches (woodblock) Signed low right. Up for sale is a beautiful original woodblock entitled Bird in Autumn by the highly collected 20th-century Japanese printmaker Toshi Yoshida. Depicting this fine little brown and yellow bird resting upon a tree branch decorated with orange and red leaves against a faint brown background makes a wonderfully pleasing image. The level of detail is tremendous from the trees leaves to each feather being visible on the bird. Signed with the artists chop mark low right as well as in the margin this work dates to the late 1970s and is part of a set of four. In absolutely fine condition this woodblock shows no signs of wear or damage but its frame does show scuffs, knicks, and acrylic shows some scratches. Toshi Yoshida Friendly Garden Woodblock Prints – All 3!!! Pine, Bamboo And Plum trees of the Friendly Garden, in beautiful, still in the original frames and matting! These have been in the family for many years and sadly its time for them to come to a new home where they can be displayed and enjoyed! There are in overall wonderful condition, however there a a few light scratches on the acrylic that covers the woodblock, and also some scratches on the wooden frames, all due to being moved and stored around the house over the years, and can be seen in the photos the Plum woodblock print has some tearing of the backing paper of the frame, which can be seen in the photos. These deserve to be enjoyed by someone passionate about Japanese Woodblock, and I can stand to see them not being hung up and enjoyed!! Beautiful, large format triptych depicting a garden with the “Three Friends of Winter, ” pine, bamboo, and plum. The trio of trees symbolizes steadfastness, perseverance, and resilience. At left, a tall pine towers over the garden pond, with stone slabs forming a bridge across the water below. In the center, a cluster of bamboo lines the walkway in from of a house. At right, a plum tree is covered with beautiful pink blossoms and buds, with a few birds perched on the branches. The pond is surrounded with shrubs and trees, with a row of evergreens shaded in blue and snow-capped mountains in the distance. A lovely design, commissioned by the Franklin Mint in 1980 and printed in Toshi Yoshida’s studio in Japan. The only triptych ever created by Toshi Yoshida, this beautiful image is rarely seen on the market and would make an impressive framed presentation. Signed – Toshi Yoshida in kanji in pencil in bottom margin of each panel. Artist – Toshi Yoshida (1911 – 1995). Image Size – Each image 19 5/8″ x 9 3/4″ + margins as shown.
