Ohara Koson (Kanazawa 1877 Tokyo 1945) was a Japanese painter and print designer, part of the shin-hanga (new prints) movement. He produced several woodblock triptychs illustrating episodes of the Russo-Japanese War, but most of his work was prints of animals (kach-ga). Among these are several charming images of domestic cats, often at a mischievous moment, as here. In the bottom left margin is the Kawaguchi Seal D, and in the bottom right margin is the Kawaguchi Seal C, indicating that the print dates from 1931 to the 1940s. Size: Paper: 16 x 10 3/4; Print: 14 1/4 x 9 2/5. There is soft creasing in the upper right and lower left corners. And other fine woodblocks now on offer. Please see our other listings. Rare Japanese Woodblock Egoyomi Surimono Calendar Print. Ca. 1810

Brian Page Antiques Brighton Chinese Japanese Antiques & Antiquities. All images on one page – no multiple clicking or pop-ups! Scroll down to view. If you have any questions, please ask. A Rare Japanese Woodblock Egoyomi Calendar Print Ca. 7 3/8 x 4 ins. (18.8 x 10.2 cms) Up until 1873 when the Western calendar was adopted the Japanese calendar was based on the Lunar system in which every year the order of long and short months was determined by the Government. Consequently, as the order of long and short varied from year to year, an annual calendar was needed. The publishers of these calendars had to be licensed by the government. Whereas many was straight forward lists it became the fashion to hide the list of months in the design, sometimes in an obvious way but often in a cunning and well hidden manner. These prints are known as egoyomi and as they were out of date after 12 months they were regarded as disposable and most no longer survive. In the present example the numerals are on the hilts and tsuba of the daisho pair of swords which are displayed in their corded silk wrappings alongside a black lacquer storage box. The print is rather worn and surface soiled. It has a light backing with the remains of mounting tape. There is an illegible signature at the right hand corner. It is quite possible that the print is the sole survivor of this design but impossible to prove. PLEASE INSPECT PHOTOS CAREFULLY. PLEASE NOTE THIS IS AN ORIGINAL PRINTING NOT A FACSIMILE OR REPRINT. PLEASE SCROLL DOWN TO SEE ALL PHOTOGRAPHS. Packing Materials: although we re-use as much packing material as possible, we may make a charge for any new materials used. Any such charge will not be greater than our cost price. Personal cheque (known UK customers). Bank / wire transfer (international customers). If choosing to pay by this method. We guarantee each item to be from the period as described. Our guarantee has no time limit. We do not sell for other dealers, we sell only our own stock. Nowadays many sellers, especially internet sellers, show items for sale not belonging to them, either because they have no actual stock of their own or they are advertising items, often of unknown origin, for clients on a commission basis. Such sellers often have very limited, highly conditional, or non-existent guarantees. With 45 years experience of Asian Art & Antiques with retail premises here in Brighton and a worldwide reputation second to none, we are pleased to offer our customers our guarantee without time limit. A genuine antique is, of course, genuine for all time and not just for seven, fourteen or thirty days and so sellers not offering such a guarantee as ours should possibly be avoided. If you wish to use our pictures and/or text please ask! The item “Rare Japanese Woodblock Egoyomi Surimono Calendar Print. Ca. 1810″ is in sale since Tuesday, March 07, 2017. Rare Ito Shinsui Cotton Kimono 1922 Japanese Woodblock Print Dated/Signed NR

Rare Ito Shinsui “Cotton Kimono” 1922 Japanese Woodblock Print Dated/Signed NR. I previously had this print listed without knowing the artist. After identification was made the listing was stopped and print removed from the frame. Ito Shinsui Twelve Images of Modern Beauties–Cotton Kimono dated and signed at upper left Shinsui 1922 early spring artist’s red rectangular seal Ito the round publisher’s seal, Watanabe, at lower left corner limited edition seal on reverse side 200 total produced. Ito Shinsui, 1898 – 1972. The publisher Watanabe Shozaburo began publishing woodblock prints by Ito Shinsui when Shinsui was still a student. This print dates from 1922 when Watanabe and Shinsui began production on this series, Twelve Figures of Modern Beauties. The series was issued from June 1922 in editions of 200, with one print released per month and distributed by the Ukiyo-e. I believe this early print in the series is one of the hardest to find. I had a friend translate and he stated The print writing is pretty straight forward, it says that the print is from early summer in 1922 (or the way it is written on the print, year 11 of the Taisho emperor reign), then the artists name is next to it (on the left side — remember they write backwards): Shinsui. Size is 16 13/16″ by 9 7/8″. There are borders on all four sides. Print has some foxing and slight fading from being in a frame and displayed. I have shown the back to show the “bleed through” of the printing process. I had originally listed in the frame and did not know the value until someone alerted me to the fact that it was by Shinsui and was most valuable. I have found the print is in the Collections of the Toledo Museum of Art and The Art Institute of Chicago. Only 200 prints were made of each of the 12 Beauties! She may be called a “new beauty” but that does not mean modern–it just means there is a traditional beauty with ordinary clothing–but the printing styles and techniques were maybe more modern. Please see below for four more pictures and I have shown how the print was originally placed in frame.
