This great and rare Tokuriki Tomikichiro Japanese Woodblock Print is of London Bridge at night – with the yellow moon rising in the background under the bridge. There is a red double decker bus crossing the bridge and boats in the water. A see flanks one side. It is hand signed and numbered 37/80. It is also signed in characters on the image as well as having the watermark on the paper. Most likely from the 1950′s the piece is in very good condition. There are some tape marks at the top , as well as some paint (as shown in photo) and a bit of discoloration on border , and a slight bend in the bottom as pictured. The colors are great, with blues, deep purples, grays, reds, greens yellow & reds. This is from the estate of a local Santa Monica watercolorist, who got it on her travels to Japan in the 1960′s. Hand Titled, Signed, Dated97 and Numbered 20 of ONLY 50 ever created in pencil by the Artist with the artists red seal in the bottom right margin. SIZE: 30.5cm x 30.5cm (16 inches x 12 inches). A beautiful original woodblock print by Japanese master of shin-hanga, Tsuchiya Koitsu. It’s a rare image titled “Lake Kawaguchi;” dusk-blue sky reflected in the water, snow-frosted Mt Fuji as centerpiece, framed by pink blossoms of a cherry tree. This was published in 1936 by Hideo Takemura (original label on back), first edition. Mounted (see notes) in paper display folio and. Protected in a frame that was unsuitable. Signed with characters and chop within the print (lower right), labeled in left margin. A stunning piece sure to please the collector. As found in original mount. Adhered to backing at top right corner; top left has come loose. Some minor creasing and wrinkling; small white spot in sky ink? And two tiny holes lower right. Original publisher’s label on back. The artist’s seal and signature is present in the bottom left corner of the image. It was published by Watanabe and is a early pre-war printing. It bears the publisher’s “B-Seal” in the bottom right margin indicating a printing date of 1927-32. This is also a rare early version with the series title printed in brown ink in the left margin. The print is “oban” sized and measures roughly 10 1/4″ x 15 1/4″ including the margins. It is in overall good condition with discoloration/toning throughout the image. There are is also some slight paper loss to the edge of the upper margin, and a small crease in the bottom right corner. Please pour over the photographs and feel free to ask questions. Size: 16 x 10 -3/4 (Oversized margins). Print has been properly stored flat in a print folio for the past 70 years. Watanabe print shop in the mid-1940′s and has always been properly stored away. Condition: Very fine, with full oversized margins and MINT delicate mica rainfall showcased in the multiple images. Has all the qualities of a first state impression with period paper, darker impression and dated provenance as well. An ancient pine tree at the side of a pond; it conveys the brooding mood of a bleak nocturnal downpour. This work was undoubtedly created to rival the print’Night Rain at Karasaki’, by Hiroshige.
