Original Tomioka Eisen Japanese Woodblock Shunga Print F

Original Tomioka Eisen (1864 – 1904) Japanese Woodblock Print – F “Comparison Of Faces” Shunga, ca. This beautiful print is from a rare and unusual “Comparison Of Faces” series. Rather than capturing the entire scene of romance, only the woman’s face and her vag are shown. To do this, the subject is split into two sides. One side features the woman’s face and the other side features a “close-up” of her vag. In the cultural context of shunga, the woman’s vag functions as another face – the face of her passion and desire that she is obligated to hide. It is a familiar trope in shunga for part eroticism to arise from the exposure of the hidden, but this series is a rare example of this effect being carried out so explicitly. In these prints, the public faces of the women are shown to no longer be able to effectively conceal their passion in the heat of the romance. Nice “bokashi” shading; light “gauffrage” (embossing) to kimono and sexual organs; very highly detailed carving of hair-lines; crisp line work. Image size – 8″ x 5 1/8″. ORIGINAL JAPANESE WOODBLOCK PRINT TWO WOMEN BY KITAGAWA UTAMARO, ca. This is an antique original (not a later print nor reproduction) print of two women, a Courtesan smoking a pipe seated on a bench on a summer night with her breasts exposed as her attendant cools her with a fan. The print is by Kitagawa Utamaro. Medium: color woodblock print (oban). Kitagawa Utamaro (1753 – 31 October 1806) was a Japanese artist and one of the most highly regarded designers of ukiyo-e woodblock prints and paintings, and is best known for his bijin okubi-e “large-headed pictures of beautiful women” of the 1790s. He also produced nature studies, particularly illustrated books of insects. Measurements: (framed) 22 x 17 x 1 inch. Unframed (from what I can tell under the glass and matting) 15 x 11 inches (approximately). Unless described as being new, the items for sale are vintage or used and it may show evidence of wear.
