Kuniyoshi Original Woodblock Diptych Miracle of Famous Painting of Matabei

The full title of this diptych is “The Miracle of Famous Paintings by Matabei” and is an original Japanese Print signed by Ichijusai Kuniyoshi ga, (Utagawa Kuniyoshi) dated 1853 June. Diptych is in the collection of Japanese prints at many well-known museums, including the. British Museum in London. It portrays one of the many subplots in the play Keisei hangonko (The Beauty Whose Spirit Appears in Incense Smoke) first performed in 1708, which involves a certain artist Matabei who is. With having created the Otsu-e style of folk painting. When Matabei is about to be arrested on false charges, the objects of his paintings magically come to life and defend him. Kuniyoshi portrays him and his work in his studio. In front of him are his sheets of paper and he holds a thick brush laden with ink. In a cloud above him – and to his own astonishment – are all the characters he has painted. Looking at the discarded sheets of paper, we see that they contain only the silhouettes of the characters dancing around him. Kuniyoshi has painted a portrait of the actor Ichikawa Kodanji IV as Matabei, and the monsters, and demons and historical figures are portraits of other actors. Kuniyoshi included all ten Otsu-e themes – the standard repertoire of Otsu-e artists after the turn of thihe nineteenth century. The 2 prints in this diptych match well with the elements on each print lining up. Each print measures approximately 14.5″ x 10″. Good impression, good color, condition as shown. Van der Peet and the Kuniyoshi Project. 100% Japanese genuine & authentic original Ukiyo-e Color Woodblock. Print from 1846; good color and a fine impression. Provenance: Ronin Gallery; Hatay Stratton Fine Art, Northampton, Massachusettes. The son of silk dyer, Kuniyoshi Utagawa was born into the Igusa family in Edo. Little is known about his very early years, though he is said to have shown remarkable talent from a young age. Kuniyoshi began his ukiyo-e career as a pupil of Shunei. At age 14 he was accepted to study the art of woodblock printing under Toyokuni I and, in time, would become one of his most successful students. In 1814, he left Toyokuni’s studio to pursue a career as an independent Japanese ukiyo-e artist. However, his fortunes changed in 1827 with his dramatic series 108 Heroes of the Suikoden. From that point on, the public hungered for his portrayals of famous samurai and legendary heroes. Kuniyoshi worked in all genres, producing some brilliant landscapes and charming bijin-ga (pictures of beautiful women). He died in the spring of 1861 from complications of a stroke. In direct contrast to the peaceful views of a scenic Japan provided by Hiroshige and Hokusai, the following decades saw a rise of the fierce, fearsome and fantastical in ukiyo-e. Kuniyoshi welcomed this changing public taste. He had a ravenous imagination and the full scope of his work reveals an aesthetic sensibility capable of assimilating almost any experience. No doubt, however, his particular genius felt most at home in the world of martial glory, where epic battles decided the fate of empires and fierce warriors clashed to the death. His imagery was so popular in his time that he received requests for tattoo designs. This item is in the category “Antiques\Asian Antiques\Japan\Prints”. The ukiyo-e depicts Musashi Miyamoto, an expert swordsman in the early Edo period, based on the legend of killing whales. It is a big whale that lies full of three pictures. The surface of the sea rose diagonally and was so rough that he lost his sense of balance. On the other hand, there were dark clouds in the sky which was cut off at the upper right of the screen, but Musashi’s expression on the back of the whale was full of confidence without a trace. Kuniyoshi Utagawa is an ukiyo-e artist who was active at the end of Edo period. His unique style has earned him the nickname “a bizarre painter” and in recent years has gained popularity among a wide range of generations as a result of a growing tendency to reevaluate his work. In the banzuke of Ukiyoe artists at that time, Hiroshige of Meishoe was listed as Kuniyoshi of Mushae. His works, which are full of rebellious and satirical spirits, won overwhelming support from the people at that time, and many disciples gathered to form the largest faction of Ukiyoe artists. The genealogy extends to Japanese-style painters in the Showa period.
