Thank you for visiting! In this work, which depicts a waterside scene as the sun begins to set and darken, blue, rather than black, is also used extensively. Itako is located in the southeastern part of Ibaraki Prefecture, in the lower reaches of the Tone River. It is an area known for its suigo (low marshland). The warehouses of merchants who prospered in the water transportation industry are the center of the motif. Today, it is a famous tourist destination. The painting depicts a waterside scene that evokes nostalgia: the moon beginning to rise. A parent and child walking along the waterfront, and a child’s boat tied up. Kawase Hasui Japanese Woodblock Print Shin Hanga Morning At Okayama Castle

Thank you for visiting! Okayama Castle Morning, 1955 (Showa 30). Okayama Castle was built in 1597 by Ukita Hideie, one of the Five Great Elders of Toyotomi. The imposing three-story, six-story castle tower is said to have been modeled after Oda Nobunaga’s Azuchi Castle and has an unequal pentagonal base, which is rare in Japan. It is a valuable keep that conveys the ancient style before the Battle of Sekigahara. It is also known as “Karasu Castle” because of its black clapboard exterior, and “Kin Karasu Castle” because of the gold ornamentation. Kawase Hasui visited Okayama in 1921 and 1934, and it is thought that this work was painted from the ferry crossing the Asahikawa River (today it is a suspension bridge) from Korakuen Garden to Okayama Castle. Overall, it is in good condition for its age without major flaws. The colors remain vivid. Please see photos for condition. If it sells first, it may run out of stock. Thank you for your understanding.

A printmaker who, along with Ito Shinsui and Yoshida Hiroshi, was a standard-bearer of the new printmaking movement. To revive the declining Ukiyo-e prints in Japan, he established a new style of Ukiyo-e prints called “Shinpanga” together with Shozaburo Watanabe, a publisher. He was a leading figure in modern landscape prints, traveling throughout Japan and producing many prints based on pictures he sketched during his travels. He has been called a “traveling poet, ” “traveling printmaker, ” and “Hiroshige of the Showa era” for his lyrical style of expressing beautiful Japanese landscapes. He is widely known in Europe and the United States, where he was introduced by the American connoisseur Robert Mueller, and is more highly regarded overseas than in Japan, where he is as popular as ukiyoe artists Katsushika Hokusai and Utagawa Hiroshige.
