Title: magome no tuki/ Full moon at Magome. Size: 12 cm× 19cm small size! Kawase Hasui, whose name is Kawase Bunjiro, was born at Shiba, Tokyo. Kanagaki Robun, a noted playwright of early Meiji period was his uncle. From childhood he loved to paint; later he became a pupil of Kaburkai Kiyokata. And in the spring of 1912 exhibited a picture in the Tatumi Exhibition of Painting. During the early stages of his art career, Hasui produced only paintings; he became. Interested in woodblock prints after seeing Shinsui’s prints “Eight sight of Omi”. Which were shown at the exhibition of the Kyodokai sponsored by Kiyokata’s school. Some of Hasui’s small landscape pictures led Shozaburou Watanabe to see his possibilities. Hasui then did his first color prints from a series of sketches made at Shiobara in 1918. One of the most talented Shin Hanga artist of the early 20th century. Kawase Hasui woodblock scenes were hand printed from the original hand carved woodblocks. Signature: Hasui with round red Sui seal below. Size: 15.25″ x 10.5″. Has some slight discoloration around the edges of the picture from the frame and sun bleaching (Please zoom in). This was a part of my grandmothers personal collection. My grandfather was an English teacher in Japan in the 50′s and 60′s. They brought back a beautiful collection of art and furniture to remind them of their home in Japan.
