Title: UKIYO GAFU: Sketch Book of the Fleeting World. Alternate Titles: UKIYO RYUSAI GAFU & or KEISAI UKIYO GAFU. SUPERB COLLABORATION BETWEEN HIROSHIGE AND KEISAI. DESCRIPTION: Delightfully interesting subjects, portrayed with a strong pen. Sketches of human figures, landscapes, flowers, birds, insects, animals of all varieties, done in light tints. The work is reminiscent of Hokusais most celebrated book series THE MANGA. Working in concert they produced a lovely set of books with superbly charming and quaint illustrations. A fine example of the best of Japans great master artists. SUBJECT OF THE ILLUSTRATIONS: The work reflects all genres and subjects of life, work and leisure in Japan during the mid-1800s. Its a virtual dictionary of human and animal activity. This encyclopedic work gives us an insight to what most Japanese saw and were familiar with during their life-time. Illustrated in shades of Sumi gray, black and pastel orange. CONDITION: Antique paper, pages vary in tone. A few pages show foxing. All in all a good impression. Very satisfying to peruse through. Original and rare, Taisho Period Hiroshige Japanese Woodblock Print Picture Book (Ehon). Date: Taisho Period, 6th year, 1917. (The tale of Soga – it’s the story about the Soga brothers and their revenge). (these are woodblock print re-strikes after his famous series of the Edo Period). Description: 100% Japanese genuine & authentic ukiyoe picture book from the Taisho Period. Very good colors and impressions. LOADED with great woodblock print artwork, 30 pictures in all! There are pictures on every second page. Condition is good with some wear and soiling. Please see and judge from photos.
