PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE DESCRIPTION. 100% Authentic Original Yoshitoshi (1839 – 1892) Japanese Woodblock Print. Moon Above the Sea at Daimotsu Bay. 100 Aspects of the Moon (Tsuki hyakushi). One Hundred Aspects of the Moon – Considered his masterwork, Yoshitoshi’s series One Hundred Aspects of the Moon features one hundred oban size woodblocks, published between 1885 and 1892. These quiet and reflective prints, beautifully composed and drawn, feature subjects from traditional Japanese and Chinese history and legend, rendered with great sensitivity and emotion. The moon appears in all but a few prints, providing a unifying motif for the series. Yoshitoshi’s innovative designs for the Moon series are often elegantly spare, with simple backgrounds that focus attention on the human figure. He combines the western influences of realism and perspective with qualities from traditional Japanese and Chinese painting, such as the emphasis on calligraphic brushstroke. The figures are carefully drawn with beautiful linework, conveying a real sense of individual character, gesture, and emotion. Special printing techniques such as embossing and burnishing add a sumptuous touch where appropriate, but simple subjects are conveyed in a likewise manner, no less carefully observed. Prints from the series were released singly or in groups every few months, with the final image completed shortly before Yoshitoshi’s death. Today, One Hundred Aspects of the Moon remains Yoshitoshi’s most well-known work, characterized by his artistry, compassion, and sensitivity in portraying the human experience. Moon Above the Sea at Daimotsu Bay – A print depicting one of Japan’s favorite heroes, Benkei stands on the prow of his boat, challenging a storm raised by the ghosts of his enemies. The enemies are illustrated in the ominous clouds hovering in the sky. A luminous moon stands in the center of the print, adding to the drama of the scene. A beautiful print with very fine detail and a famous subject. Artist – Yoshitoshi (1839 – 1892). Condition – This expertly (museum quality anti reflective / anti UV) framed print with excellent color and detail. Backed with stiff paper. No rectangular box stain surrounding Benkei character that is historically due to being in an album collection (chemical reaction opposing print pressing on the front of this one – a common defect that is frequently seen with this print). This print is in outstanding condition, without aforementioned defect/damage. Please see photos for details. Excellent overall and extremely rare. All sales are FINAL. PLEASE SEE MY OTHER LISTINGS. 3 Mid-Century Japanese wood block prints. The bottom print is Two Cats by Tomoo Inagaki. These are not photocopies. Each of these is approximately 6 1/2 tall. The set has been professionally framed behind glass and has been double matted. Each print is still on its original backing paper which is attached to that paper at the top edge. I do not see any pencil signatures or writing. There are artist marks on the prints: to the left bottom on the Uma Horse and Two Cats; to the right bottom by the little boy’s foot. We have many more photos of these woodblock prints but can only list 12 with the listing. These are really an astonishingly nice set. In researching these pieces, we found that Yoseida Gallery in Tokyo commissioned small woodblock prints from artists as an attachment to Christmas cards that they would send to their clients. Presumably, the prints were created by the artists in the 1960s/70s. I will enclose the information that I have found about this with the artwork. If you have any additional information, it would be greatly appreciated. This is really a great set for your collection. International Buyers Please Note. These charges are the buyers responsibility. The artist was born in Iwate, Japan, and he moved to Kyoto in 1960, where he became the private pupil of Koho Yoshida. He also studied under Shigechika Ohtsubo. In 1983, he and two other artists exhibited in the Kyoto 100 Landscapes. In 1990, he exhibited in Chicago by special invitation. Masao Ido designed stamps and an official city poster in Japan. His works are present in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and in the Library of Congress. Condition The print looks wonderful, with no damage noted. This is a popular print by him with the bold yellow colors. Feel free to make an offer on it. Haku Maki was born in the Ibaraki Prefecture of Japan and is known for this wood and cement block relief prints. Maki is prominently known for his use of kanji and stylized calligraphy to created a bold statement. When creating his prints Maki would work wet cement onto in woodblocks to create new textures. Late in life, he began to focus on smaller works, with persimmons and other fruit, teacups, bowls, and bottles. While using his cement technique this would create a three-dimensional appearance. Maki was one of ten artists chosen for James Micheners 1968 book, The Modern Japanese Print An Appreciation. The book was launched at the same time as an exhibition of eighty-five different Maki prints from all periods. His work is housed in museums across the world including Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, British Museum, London, Art Institute of Chicago, and the Cincinnati Art Museum to name a few.
