This is a guaranteed antique and original. (wood block print) by a late Edo c. 1800 era artist, Utamaro. Shunga (erotic prints) were outlawed to produce during the Edo era but were so poplular that all the leading artists created them. This print, unsigned, but attributed to the Edo era artist Utamaro, features an enthusiastic patron and geisha fulfilling the height of their passion. This print is a two page manga size measuring 8 1/2″ x 7″ — (22 x 18 cm). It has been professionally matted on museum mat in a neutral black frame sealed in glass. The overall frame size is 13 1/4″ by 10 1/4″ (35 x 26 cm). The paper this print is made of took over 200 days to make. The paper is made of the inner bark of the gampi (mulberry) tree and made to last virtually indefinitely. Having been recently matted and framed, this print remains in very fine condition , crisp with full. Covers are a little tatty but the prints inside are in remarkable condition except for the page with September’s wording which has small v shaped damage to page (shown in photo) and a slight indentation towards the beginning of book (shown in photo). A rare and beautiful piece of Japanese history! Hasegawa Takejir (18531938) was an innovative Japanese publisher specializing in books in European languages on Japanese subjects. Hasegawa employed leading foreign residents as translators and noted Japanese artists as illustrators, and became a leading purveyor of export books and publications for foreign residents in Japan. The term chirimen-bon refers to books that were made by crinkling washi i. Japanese paper printed with the contents i. Text and/or pictures before binding them Japanese-style as pages. They are called Crepe-paper books in English. Typically, the text was illustrated by a Japanese illustrator in accordance with the plot, and hand-carved woodblocks were used for manual printing on high-grade washi, which was crinkled before binding.
