A printmaker who, along with Ito Shinsui and Yoshida Hiroshi, was a standard-bearer of the new printmaking movement. To revive the declining Ukiyo-e prints in Japan, he established a new style of Ukiyo-e prints called “Shinpanga” together with Shozaburo Watanabe, a publisher. He was a leading figure in modern landscape prints, traveling throughout Japan and producing many prints based on pictures he sketched during his travels. He has been called a “traveling poet, ” “traveling printmaker, ” and “Hiroshige of the Showa era” for his lyrical style of expressing beautiful Japanese landscapes. He is widely known in Europe and the United States, where he was introduced by the American connoisseur Robert Mueller, and is more highly regarded overseas than in Japan, where he is as popular as ukiyoe artists Katsushika Hokusai and Utagawa Hiroshige. We will carefully deliver using the packing material. We will do our best to match your asking price. Thank you for reading to the end. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions ^ ^.

Vintage Suiho Matsumura Woodblock Print Set with Frame. This piece is based on a design by the renowned Kyoto Yuzen pattern designer, Mr. Suiho Matsumura, who was active from the late Taisho era to the early Showa era. Originally, it was designed as a pattern for the hem of men’s undergarments (juban). This design was later adapted by the first owner of PyonPyon-do, Mr. Ihei Okamoto, who turned it into woodblock prints and produced them as decorative pochibukuro (small gift envelopes). This practice has continued from the Taisho and Showa eras to the present day. Both pochibukuro designs are based on circles, triangles, and squares, and they are so modern-looking that they can be easily mistaken for contemporary works. These are among our representative works and have gained popularity with many people. Frame Size L 14.3inch x W 24.2 inch /. 36.5 x 61.5 (cm).
