This is a print by Iwao Akiyama, a master of Munakata Shiko. It contains haiku by Taneda Santoka. The poem is by Taneda Santoka. Even as life approaches its final stages, Santoka seems to convey a sense of emptiness, feeling that a nomadic lifestyle across various provinces is the only way for him to live. It’s said that Taneda Santoka’s life was a series of misfortunes from the time he lost his mother during his childhood until his death. This poem seems to reflect the world as perceived through his eyes. He is being advanced in age, he was not accepted into a temple for monk training, leaving him with no choice but to live the life of a wandering monk. This verse can be seen as a work where Santoka expresses that the only path left for him is to live as a wandering monk, suggesting “this is the only way” for him in life.
