Rare antique item – depicting Japanese folk tales / market scenes. Hiroshige II was a Japanese designer of ukiyo-e art. He inherited the name Hiroshige II following the passing in 1858 of his master Hiroshige, whose daughter he married. In 1865 he moved from Edo to Yokohama after dissolving his marriage and began using the name Kisai Rissho. His work so resembles that of his master that scholars have often confused them. Two original Japanese woodblock prints by Utagawa Hiroshige II, from the Edo Period, depicting Japanese folk tale market scenes. The prints are in excellent condition considering their age, with no holes or damage only minor thinning to paper commensurate with age – please see the photograph taken from the rear – the thinner areas are only viewable when held up to the light, and importantly barely visible when viewed normally from the front when framed. Both prints are clearly stamped with the original makers mark. The woodblocks measure approximately 353mm x 245mm visible area, the paper is slightly larger. The modern frame measures 540mm x 439mm and is in perfect condition. Please see the photographs which form part of the description.
