It is an ukiyoe depicting Musashi Miyamoto, an expert swordsman in the early Edo period, based on the legend of whale extermination. A giant whale lying in a row of three. The surface of the sea is raging to the point where you lose your sense of balance, while the sky cut off at the top right corner of the screen is covered with dark clouds, but Musashi’s face on the back of the whale has no shadow and is full of confidence. 36.8 × 78.0 cm. Explanation in Japanese and English. Kuniyoshi Utagawa was an ukiyo-e artist who was active at the end of the Edo period. Haku Maki Color Woodblock San Mon Ban 75-62 Melon No. 299/302 & Signed 6 X 6

On offer, we have a woodblock by Haku Maki. 75-62 San Mon Ban (Melon) has the artist’s stamp with pencil signed name, title and number 299/302. This small still life is full of detail including a pale yellow stem. Made in 1975, Maki produced a number of variations of the melon theme in his career. This measures 6″ X 6″ with the image 4″ X 4″. It is mounted at the top with tape on a 7 7/8″ X 7″ paper. This print was the 62nd design in the year of 1975, therefore part of the title is 75-62. This was a system he used until the 1980′s when he refined his numbering system. We believe this in excellent vintage condition. The print is bright, bold, clean and clear. There are faint pencil marks under the signature. It has been handled and has some light wrinkles. The plain paper mounting has Haku Maki written on both sides, but not by the artist. This is from my friend who collects everything and is starting to part with a few of his treasures.
