Kanagaki Robun, a noted playwright of early Meiji period was his uncle. From childhood he loved to paint; later he became a pupil of Kaburkai Kiyokata. And in the spring of 1912 exhibited a picture in the Tatumi Exhibition of Painting. During the early stages of his art career, Hasui produced only paintings; he became. Interested in woodblock prints after seeing Shinsui’s prints “Eight sight of Omi”. Which were shown at the exhibition of the Kyodokai sponsored by Kiyokata’s school. Some of Hasui’s small landscape pictures led Shozaburou Watanabe to see his possibilities. Hasui then did his first color prints from a series of sketches made at Shiobara in 1918.
