EIJIRO Evening Cool on Sumida antique Japanese woodblock print

One of publisher Hasegawa-Nishinomiya’s poetic “Night Scene Series”. The summer evening on Sumida River. A lady is about to step into a small pleasure boat. The full moon illuminates the misty Sumida river. Eijiro Kobayashi was a Japanese artist associated with the shin-hanga (New Prints) art movement in Japan during the early 20th century. This movement was influenced by European Impressionism and its imagery focused on landscapes, women, and nature. In the 1920s, the publisher Hasegawa commissioned a small group of artists to create woodblock prints for a series entitled Hasegawas Night Scenes, of which there were a total of 21 prints by 6 artists. Eijiro Kobayashi was born in 1870 (died in 1946). Little is known about the life of Eijiro Kobayashi. He is known for woodblock prints of romantic night and evening scenes in shin hanga style. There are only 3 different designs. To our knowledge these are the only designs of woodblock prints by Eijiro Kobayashi. The prints were published by Hasegawa, and later by Nishinomiya. The designs show scenes from the Sumida river with the exception of one design showing a pagoda. Please see images for condition. This is an early state version of Evening Cool on Sumida by Eijiro Kobayashi. The print is without margins, typical for early edition printings, and is adhered to a backing paper. Visible toning around the edges of the print. 10 × 7 in. The item “EIJIRO Evening Cool on Sumida antique Japanese woodblock print” is in sale since Monday, November 2, 2020.
