“Evening at Beppu” (Beppu No Yube). (Souvenirs of travel–third series), 1929. Beautiful mood, composition, and perspective, In my opinion! Please read below for information on this print. For reference only and not guaranteed to be accurate. Published by Watanabe Shozaburo. Left margin: Japanese title, and date (Showa Yo Nen saku – made in the show, 4th year -1929). Right margin: Publisher’s Watanabe of Tokyo rectangular stamp, or B seal, only used between 1924 and 1930. This is a rarer print, and appears in near mint condition, with the block’s woodgrain nicely imprinted, and beautiful atmospheric effects. Fine color, impression, and state; full margins. “Evening at Beppu” appeared in the “Catalogue of Woodcut Prints” by Watanabe in 1936 (page 82, #35), and was exhibited at the Toledo Museum of Art in 1936 Modern Japanese Prints Exhibition. The technical information found from that time: Blocks, around 10; superimposed printings, around 15. May be a first edition, Pre-world war I period, state from 1929, and appears that it has never been framed or displayed (it was found safely stored flat inside an old portfolio). It still has a “Made in Japan” label glued to the lower back (for export, which was mandated by US regulations between 1921 and 1941), and it is titled in English on the upper back with pencil it looks like a literal translation – may have been titled in Japan? On the lower right corner, it shows the residue of maybe another sticker.
