OHARA KOSON, SCARCE ANTIQUE ORIGINAL JAPANESE WOODBLOCK PRINT, HARE & FULL MOON. A scarce antique early 20th Century Japanese woodblock print. Depicting a white hare on his hind legs, with a full moon above appearing from behind the clouds. The print is framed and glazed within a simple black wood frame. Ref: K41.16, plate 102, in Crows, Cranes and Camellias: The Natural World of Ohara Koson, Reigle/Newland. Koson (aka Shoson or Hoson) was born in Kanazawa with the given name Matao Ohara. He began his artistic career studying painting under the Shijo-style master Kason. Around the turn of the century, Koson became a teacher at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, where he met Ernest Fenollosa, an American collector, scholar and admirer of Japanese art and culture. Around 1905, Koson started to practice Japanese block printing. Fenollosa, the curator of Japanese Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and an adviser to the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo, persuaded Koson to export woodblock prints to American art collectors. Between 1900 and 1912 Koson created mainly. (bird-and-flower pictures), with his earliest and most coveted designs are notable for their narrow formats and soft colours. Mounted: 37.5 cm x 21.7 cm or 14 3/4 inches x 8 1/2 inches. Aperture: 33.8 cm x 18 cm or 13 1/4 inches x 7 inches. The print is in good condition, cleanly framed in a sympathetic black wood frame.
