It is titled “Blue Bird, ” and is about 11 1/4 inches high, and 16 1/4 inches wide. The artist’s signature is written in pencil on the right side of the bottom border. On the left side of the bottom border is the edition number (85/100), title in Japanese, and the year (1961). The print is attached by two tape “hinges” on the upper back border of the print. As can be seen in the photos, there is some toning and mat burn present. Also the reverse side of the print (see photo) has a darkened edge, and the evidence of inks that have come through the paper and left their marks. There is a tiny “pinhole” that is visible when the print is held up to the light. It is located in a straight line down from the bird’s eye, and just under about one third from the bottom of the image, within a brown rectangular area. Nonetheless, it is not discernible when normally viewed (although evident under a magnifier). The colors remain strong and vibrant. Overall this print is in excellent vintage condition! Shima is one of the featured artists in the book “The Modern Japanese Print: An Appreciation”.
