Offered for sale is a 1928 woodblock print by Hiroshi Yoshida titled Himeji Castle, Evening. It was published in the November, 1928 Enthronement Edition: The Japan Advertiser. This is a complete account of the enthronement ceremonies of the Emperor Showa, (1926 to 1989). Founded in 1905, The Japan Advertiser, an English language newspaper later acquired by The Japan Times, was the most influential English language newspaper in East Asia. Himeji Castle, built for strategic warfare, was originally erected in 1346 and was transformed into its present five tiered configuration with three smaller donjons in 1601. It is located in Himeji, Hyogo Prefecture. This print was derived from Yoshida’s 1926 print, Himeji Castle, Evening. The blocks were recut for this print and printed and published by the Yoshida family studio in an edition of 2000 prints. The Yoshida signature is printed on the lower left and the Hiroshi seal (a vertical rectangle with red lines) is stamped below the signature. “Himejijo-yu”, (Himeji Castle, Evening), is printed vertically on the lower left margin. The print, including the margins, measures 10 3/16″ by 15 3/16″. It is tipped at the top to page number 59, which measures 12 1/8″ by 17″. It is in pristine condition with excellent colors and impression and excellent bleed through. Thank you for considering it. Please note: the print was photographed on a bright white background.
