A Japanese Woodblock Triptych Print by Kuniyoshi. Assembled size 29 1/2 x 14 1/2 ins. (75 x 36.7 cms) The scene shows the occasion of 1000 Cranes (symbols of longevity and good luck) being released on the shore at Yuigahama by the Shogun, Minamoto no Yoritomo as an offering to the Tsurugaoka Hachiman Shrine The baskets which contained the cranes together with their attendants, are lined up on the shore. The unusual and attractive print is one of the less known of Kuniyoshi’s many triptychs. Although the colours are original the three sheets have some condition problems. There are various fold lines which can be seen on the photos, the vertical line on the centre sheet has been reinforced on the reverse, the bottom edges which were somewhat ragged from wear have been reinforced on the reverse. There are several minor repairs here and there (see photos) and some minor touching-in on some repaired fold lines. Please note that the three sheets are not joined. PLEASE INSPECT PHOTOGRAPHS CAREFULLY. PLEASE NOTE THIS IS AN ORIGINAL PRINTING NOT A FACSIMILE OR REPRINT. PLEASE SCROLL DOWN TO SEE ALL PHOTOGRAPHS. Packing Materials: although we re-use as much packing material as possible, we may make a charge for any new materials used. Any such charge will not be greater than our cost price. Personal cheque (known UK customers). Bank / wire transfer (international customers). If choosing to pay by this method. We guarantee each item to be from the period as described. Our guarantee has no time limit. We do not sell for other dealers, we sell only our own stock. Nowadays many sellers, especially internet sellers, show items for sale not belonging to them, either because they have no actual stock of their own or they are advertising items, often of unknown origin, for clients on a commission basis. Such sellers often have very limited, highly conditional, or non-existent guarantees. With 45 years experience of Asian Art & Antiques with retail premises here in Brighton and a worldwide reputation second to none, we are pleased to offer our customers our guarantee without time limit. A genuine antique is, of course, genuine for all time and not just for seven, fourteen or thirty days and so sellers not offering such a guarantee as ours should possibly be avoided. If you wish to use our pictures and/or text please ask! The item “Rare Japanese Woodblock Triptych print. Kuniyoshi. Release of 1000 Cranes 1843″ is in sale since Monday, January 23, 2017. Kawase Hasui The Complete Woodblock Prints by Kendall Brown
Author: adminJan 23
His prints, produced under the guidance and stern eye of his publisher, Watanabe Shtzaburt, are the modern continuation of the unforgettable works by Hiroshige and Hokusai, the 19th-century masters of this genre. As none other, he could evoke Japan of the eventful interwar period. With the exception of a single print, his main oeuvre is shown in its entirety in full colour in this new publication. Also included are the prints Hasui produced for other publishers, including pieces never before reproduced, as well as monochrome illustrations of miscellaneous prints, such as postcards, doll prints and others. Fifty-seven prints are shown in alternative states. Hasui’s work enjoyed huge popularity from his very first print of 1918. In contrast to his illustrious 19th-century predecessors, his work was immediately successful in the rest of the world. His publisher, Watanabe Shtzaburt, recognized the enormous potential of the American market, which resulted in Hasui’s prints fetching high prices at auctions in New York as early as the 1920s. After the Second World War, his prints were highly desired and sought after collectible items among the American occupying forces in Japan. Hasui’s work has always been greatly appreciated in Japan: He was acknowledged as a’Living National Treasure’ in 1965, but it was only in 1977 that one of the’grand old men’ in the field of prints in Japan, Narazaki Muneshige, wrote a splendid monograph. His book, which is only very occasionally available at antiquarian bookshops, is now being replaced by this new complete, bilingual (English-Japanese)publication. Hotei Publishing produced this book in close cooperation with the daughter and grandson of the original publisher of 90% of Hasui’s oeuvre, Watanabe Shtzaburt. The best examples of Hasui’s work have been selected from three prominent collections (Dutch, American and Japanese). The introduction by Ken Brown is based on the results of his extensive research in Japan, interviews with the Watanabe family, and all Japanese- and European-language sources. The commentaries to the prints consist partly of fragments from Hasui’s diaries (appearing here in English for the first time), partly of explanations derived from Narazaki Muneshige’s observations, and partly of new information intended to provide Western readers with the background to the outstanding Japanese rural and urban landscapes Hasui selected for his depictions. The chapter by Watanabe Shtichirt provides insights into his grandfather’s publishing philosophy and is a helpful guide for collectors confronting the complex issues of editions, versions and variations. The item “Kawase Hasui The Complete Woodblock Prints by Kendall Brown” is in sale since Wednesday, July 27, 2016. This item is in the category “Books\Textbooks, Education”.
