Shoda Koho 1871-1946 Japanese Pillar Woodblock Print Boy Riding Ox Framed

This listing is for the original framed woodblock print that you see in the photos. A note on the reverse indicates that it it was framed in 1968. The frame measures close to 20 3/8 by 6 inches. The print measures close to 14 1/4 by 3 1/2 inches. The framed print weighs close to 1 pound 4.6 ounces. The print appears to be glued to some kind of white background. I have not examined it out of the frame. Please be aware that the print is behind glass and that there are many reflections in the photos. The condition is much like you see it in the photos. There are three brownish spots of discoloration at the top of the print that I imagine were caused by glue. Otherwise, the print appears to be in excellent condition with no damage. There are some tiny specks of white on the frame that look like missing finish. The narrow inner lining on the frame shows some light signs of use. The paper backing on the frame is a little damaged. The frame could benefit from a little cleaning. Otherwise, this item is fine and as shown. My photos should give you a good idea of its general condition. I guarantee this print to be as described and represented by the 12 photos after the general description. The photos are part of the description. Please look at all of them. Please know that the lighting in my photos is uneven and that there might be shadows or reflections. The colors on my monitor look close to but not exactly like the actual colors. Different monitors may show different colors. I often say that an item measures or weighs “close to” because in my opinion no measurements are exact and some things are difficult to measure. Often, I have a double wall box custom made for larger items and that might result in a short delay. When I use packing peanuts, they are usually biodegradable. Sometimes, I use used boxes. 12 photos should load with this listing. This item is in the category “Antiques\Asian Antiques\Japan\Prints”. The seller is “foundfeeling” and is located in this country: US.

Japanese Toyoharu's Pillar Woodblock Print hashira-e, pillar picture

Japanese Toyoharu’s Pillar Print “hashira-e, pillar picture”. Stunning vintage condition beautifully framed. This is probably a modern reissue of Toyoharu’s pillar print called “hashira-e, pillar picture” suitable for decorating a pilar. Suggest a date of the late 18th century. The second half of the 18th century was the golden age of innovation in ukiyo-e. During this period, woodblock print artists experimented with a variety new techniques and sizes. The most unique of these formats was the long, narrow hashira-e, or the pillar print. This new size allowed for compositions that brimmed with grace and emotion, employing negative space and vertical dynamism to great effect. And while these more unusual sizes presented their own challenges to the printing process, they also allowed the artist to be experimental, imaginative and innovative with the designs compositional space. Hashira-e were often pasted to the pillars in traditional Japanese homes, and as such, they were exposed to smoke and dust, making those that have survived exceedingly precious works of art. I try to accurately assess the condition of each item. I get my description information through research and other collectors opinions. All descriptions are for informational purposes only. Suzuki Harunobu Pillar Print Scholars Spying Beauty Japanese Woodblock

This is a original Japanese Woodblock print by one of the leaders of Early Japanese Prints makers, Suzuki Harunobu. Its of the period and extremely rare. Areas in photos that look dark are from a shadow from lighting. I found one example of this print from a Christies 2000 print sale, better colors but image was trimmed thinner by 1/4. Its a great pillar print depicting a pair of scholars spying on a beauty near a river bank. Of course with age conditions issues are present. Some small thins and worm hole repairs , print has a center fold line. Its been backed onto larger piece of rice paper. Print Size 26.5″ x 4 3/4″. Please look at photos for grading and condition.
