Collection of Asian art formed by the previous owner during his travels in Japan between 1882 and 1920. An original Toyokuni III Utagawa Japanese woodblock triptych titled’Kana-dehon Chushingura’, (a kabuki play about the famous 47 ronin ordered by the Shogun to commit seppuku for attacking court official Kira Yoshinaka; taking revenge for their Daimyo) published by Tsujiokaya Bunsuke 1862. Size: (L) 36.4 x 25.8 (C) 36.5 x25.7 (R) 36.5x 25.7. Cm’s. Kunisada’s 47 Ronin remains one of the greatest ukiyo-e series of the late Edo period. On very fine hand made Gampi paper, a well preserved lifetime impression. The seventeenth-century English writer and diarist John Evelyn wrote about Japanese paper in his diary of 22 June 1664. Among the collection there were some papers, which he described as: a sort of paper very broad, thin, and fine, like parchment, of an amber yellow, exceedingly glorious and pretty to look on. Some signs of wear commensurate with Antique/some toning and creasing with small holes here and there, overall a well preserved lifetime impression in fine condition.
