Tsukioka Yoshitoshi Original 19c. Woodblock Print #1

Tsukioka Yoshitoshi Original 19c. Woodblock Print #1

Twenty-four Accomplishments in Imperial Japan – Yoshitoshi’s late series “Twenty-four Accomplishments in Imperial Japan” highlights important figures throughout the history of Imperial Japan, from both legend and real life. Sugawara no Michizane Evoking a Thunderstorm – Fantastic image of Sugawara no Michizane, a poet and cabinet minister during the Heian era. In 901 a rival accused him of treason, and Emperor Daigo exiled him to an administrative post in Kyushu. After his death, a series of disasters and epidemics struck the capital, which were attributed to his angry ghost seeking revenge. To appease him, a shrine was built and he was worshipped as the god Tenman Tenjin, originally associated with thunder and agriculture. He is shown here standing on the rugged Mt. Tenpai, calling forth the thunder to avenge his honor as orange lightening zigzags across the sky and wind blows his hair and robes. A terrific print from this fascinating series with a beautiful burnished pattern in the black robe and embossing in the white sash fluttering around his feet. This impression is from a posthumous edition published by Matsuki Heikichi between 1893 – 1895. Artist – Yoshitoshi (1839 – 1892) Image Size – 13″ x 8 3/4″ + margins as shown Condition – With excellent color and detail as shown. Wait for my invoice. The item “TSUKIOKA YOSHITOSHI ORIGINAL 19C. This is an original complete set of the 12 Months of the year. I will try to describe accurately! 1′Lady of January -The woodblock has 2 complete tears at the top. The tears measure approx. 1″ by 3/4″, and 1″ x 1″. The left and right corners. I can match them up near perfectly. There are 2 other small tears on the top border of the print. That is, not on the print. The border has 4 or 5 small tears and a large part of 2 labels is missing. It is about gone with nothing written remaining. She is wearing a green kimono. 2′Lady of February Almost all of 2 labels missing on the lower left hand margin. She is wearing a purple kimono. 3′Lady of March-Very nice condition with just the bare remnants of labels on right hand lower border. She is wearing a blue kimono. 4Lady of April-Beautiful condition of print. One tiny round spot where the blue color is missing in the middle of the kimono. Very little remnants of label on right lower border. About 5 little border tears on right side of border 5Lady of May-Very nice condition! Just remnants of the label near bottom right side. 6Lady of June-Diagonal streak from left top to right hand side several inchs down the side, The streak is gray like dust Just guessing! A few little dirt or dust spots here and there from dust. Several pinpricks on the margin. 7Lady of July-2 Tears-one on left side and one on right side. Similar to January but much smaller tears. Small tears of a label. 8Lady of August-Nice condition. 9Lady of September-A flat wrinkle near the right hand top corner. The backing has quite a few tears on the lower half. Not on the print. On the right corner of the print 1 1/4″ by 1″ tear on print. On right hand top corner a narrow cut measuring 1 1/2 long. 10Lady of October-One small tear on the upper left corner. About 3/4 curved to straight tear. Faint label edges remaining. 11 Lady of November-Nice condition. 12Print in nice condition. Border has some tears. I took another set of photos as someone requested that the backs be exhibted. Please ask questions now as I can’t always answer all the questions at the end. TODAY’S PHOTOS: January torn off top. Top will match up nicely with the small pcs that are still there. March & April nice! May- Small dust streak on top of backing.. June-Light dust streak on upper left side on a diagonal going down about 5 in length. July-Print is seperate from backing. Tiny piece that matchs up on left side and small piece remaining on backing that matchs up also. September- Left hand top corner is loose but just came off. However the backing paper has multiple small tears on the sides. October has the prettiest leaves. Small tear on left side but does not tear off. Just about 3/4 in from left top side. November is in good condition! December is in fine shape also with the exception of the backing has a few tears on the left hand sides. Thank you for your patience!
