Up for sale is a rare and exquisite example of Junichiro Sekinos woodblock print entitled Roof Top Sea Scape. From the edition of only 138, this example is numbered 61 as seen low left and is signed in pencil low right Juni Sekino. Dated 1977 this extremely large woodblock measures 21 3/4 x 29 1/2 inches with its full margins while the print measures 18 1/4 x 25 1/2 inches. Depicting a ferocious ocean of tossing waves in the distance, the foreground is composed of still, neatly patterned roofs almost keeping the contrasting sea at bay. In the distance towers and larger buildings are seen over the seaside cliff all of which help create not only an aesthetically pleasing print but one of extreme uniqueness when it comes to this period of Japanese prints. The condition is very good overall with minimal discoloration to the sheet and minor matt burn. The colors have retained extraordinarily well with its soft arrays of blues and earth tones. Within the low left sheet the artists name is seen watermarked into the paper which is characteristic of his fine prints. JAPANESE WOODBLOCK PRINT BY KATSUYUKI NISHIJIMA. ROOF OF SHOGOIN TEMPLE, KYOTO. This Large Limited Edition Japanese Woodblock Print is by Famous Artist Katsuyuki Nishijima. It is Signed, Numbered and is Titled. Katsuyuki Nishijima was born in 1945 in Yamaguchi Province of Japan. From 1964 to 1968 he studied the art of Woodblock Prints in the studio of the Mikumo publishing house in Kyoto as well as exhibiting his work with the Kyoto independent artists and in solo displays. From 1972 he focused his immense talents on limited edition woodblocks using traditional old buildings as his main subject matter. Katsuyuki Nishijima’s woodblocks come in a number of formats and the larger sizes are limited editions of usually 500, all hand signed, titled and numbered but normally never dated. He has also produced a number of open edition woodblocks since the mid 1970s which are hand signed and titled and again not dated.
