The series seal is in the left margin with the. This spectacular design was ONLY issued in a single limited edition printing of 300 impressions. Mori in Chicago, mid-1930′s and kept for three generations in the same collection of an American family. Kumamoto Castle was erected in the first decade of the 17th century by Kato Kiyomasa, and later was under the rule of the Hosokawa family. It was badly damaged in 1877 during the Satsuma rebellion, the last armed uprising against the new reforms of the Meiji government. Saigo Takamori and his troops sheltered for some fifty days in the castle before their eventual defeat at the hands of government troops. The castle was rebuilt almost one-hundred years later in 1960. Due to the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 – which destroyed almost two-thirds of Tokyo – Hasui moved near the Magome district in 1926 and in 1930 to Magome itself, where he lived until his death. Surprisingly, the number of prints that Hasui created illustrating the surroundings of Magome are not great, although he did keep sketchbooks that portrayed scenes of the area. Throughout his career Hasui produced many albums of sketches; however, tragically, he lost some 200 sketchbooks in the conflagration following the Kanto earthquake. In describing this print Narazaki explains:’This work shows a cultivated field on an arable mountain slope. A field such as this enhances the compositional mood. An expansive scene facing the unusual peak of the Unzen volcano across the sea in the distance, this print is a fine example in this series’.
