Katsuyuki Nishijima (1945 -) Japanese Woodblock Print, OCHAYA, Vintage 1981. This striking woodblock print of a very famous Ochaya (Geisha “tea house”) “Tomiyo” (1804) in Gion, Kyoto, Japan. Nishijima is known for his contemporary woodblock prints in the sosaku hanga tradition, designing, carving, and printing each block himself. Inspired by the beauty of Japan, Nishijima illustrates traditional inns and quiet streets, glorious sunsets and dusky evenings, spring blossoms and summer fields. The print is signed in pencil and also bears the red artist seal, as well as showing the edition number 50 of 500 prints. Image Size 15 ¾ x 11 ¼. With White Mat and Frame. 21 x 16 ½. Wood frame shows some minor wear. Woodblock print on paper. Was born in Yamaguchi Prefecture in 1945. From 1969 to 1972, he experimented with stencil dyeing and various forms of printing before focusing on woodblock printmaking in the sosaku hanga or creative print style woodblocks taking subjects from old traditional buildings. He is one of few woodblock artists in Japan who continues to produce a print by the same process as the 300-year-old manufacturing method. Although his woodblock prints are very popular, for the most part, Nishijima remains out of the public eye, while quietly producing his art.
