Antiques, Fine Art & Collectibles. Vintage 1971 Japanese Woodblock Print Original Signed Art Yoshitoshi Mori 32/50. DESCRIPTION Original vintage woodblock print by Yoshitoshi Mori (1898 – 1992). This print depicts a Samurai warrior with the head of an opponent after a battle. The strong earthy colors and contorted position of the main character is typical of Moris style. Made in a very small number of 50 this piece is number 32 of the series, marked with the artists chopmark, signed and dated in pencil for 1971. Mori was a Japanese artist who specialized in kappazuri stencil prints. He was for many years a member of the mingei folk craft movement, and was close with Yanagi Setsu, founder of the movement. Yoshitoshi is said to have influenced several major 20th century print artists especially in Japan. His colorful works generally depict scenes from the kabuki theatre, or subjects related to folk traditions and festivals. He is known for using earthy colors in his work, and for often positioning his figures in a somewhat contorted and dynamic mass. Mori’s prints depict the past world of Tokyo’s plebeian lowlands (Shitamachi) with its festivals, craftsmen and women of the demimonde. The mainstay of his great talent lies in his ability to not merely capture detail, but to boldly evoke emotions through his highly stylized designs. Mori exhibited his works in numerous one-man shows in Japan in the 1960s and took part in 30 international exhibitions between 1957 and 1977. MEASUREMENTS The woodblock measures 26.5″long by 21″ wide by 2 deep and weighs 7lbs. CONDITION In good condition with no tears or stains (please see all pictures as they form part of the condition description). Authentic hand printed Japanese woodblock print. All of our pictures were taken by scanner from our woodblock prints. Sometime during scanning process, the image get diffuse reflection from scanner. That makes yellow shadow on our picture. However all of our prints are perfect condition and not such yellow part on our print. Approx Washi paper Size. Height 23.90 cm x Width 17.10 cm. (H 9.409 ” x W 6.732 “). Originally published in 1941 by Yoshida studio. This is the later edition from original woodblocks. But very old print in New condition. Printed in Tokyo Japan. Only perfect condition sheet with perfect original color. Kept in very professional condition. The color of the actual woodblock print may be slightly different from the image on our pictures. Original Signed Yoshitoshi Mori in Original Japanese Frame. Artist: YOSHITOSHI MORI (1898 -1992) Medium: Mid Century Japanese Wood Block by Well Known Japanese Artist. Original Japanese Frame with Glare Free Glass. Signed/Sealed: Signed in Pencil and sealed with the artist’s seal. Print Size: 15 1/2 X 10 3/4 inches. Framed Size: 22 1/4 x 17 1/8 inches Condition: Colors are vibrant but appear to be less so in the images which is probably due to the glare free glass. Water spots on top front of mat and top of back panel visible in 2nd picture. They do appear to have affected the print in any way. Print has not been removed from original Japanese frame. The matt black Japanese frame has some minor wear. The print is loose in the frame and tends to slide off center, which show some discoloration consistent with age.
