C1970 Modernist Japanese Woodblock Print Love by Haku Maki 220/250

Maki is the assumed name of Maejima Taadaki. Maki studied under the famous printmaker Onchi, and quickly became acclaimed for his embossed prints, dealing with a range of subjects, particularly those of kanji (Chinese characters). I’ve done quite a bit of research into this print, and as I understand it, in 1970, Felix Juda, a super-collector who was close with Onchi, commissioned Maki to make a series of card prints through the Red Lantern Shop in Kyoto. This print is one of those that were commissioned. This is shows the Kanji for “Love” in Japanese on a yellow background with a blue sun. This print is tipped to a backing card which indicates it was commissioned by Juda. The print is titled (with the Kanji) at center, signed Haku Maki at lower right and numbered (220/250). An exquisite and rare piece that any Maki collector would love. Condition: The print and backing card are in excellent condition. Measurements: Print measures approximately 4.75 inches wide x 4.75 inches high. Backing card measures 5.6875 inches wide x 5.6875 inches high. If the item is not paid for within this time frame, an unpaid item case will be opened. More pictures available on request. Maki is the assumed name of Maejima Taadaki. Maki studied under the famous printmaker Onchi, and quickly became acclaimed for his embossed prints, dealing with a range of subjects, particularly those of kanji (Chinese characters). This print is from 1970, and is entitled Poem 70-11. I love the intaglio detail. As noted below, it does have some noticeable condition issues, but the foxing is not very distinct unless viewed up close. I’m not sure if the print can be removed from the matting, and haven’t attempted to do so. It should look great when properly framed and displayed. It’s a rare and exquisite large-form version of Maki’s printwork. Print has numerous instances of foxing throughout the intaglio portion. Matting is slightly frayed on left side. Backing board has some waviness. Measurements: Print measures approximately 23 inches high x 16 inches wide (sight). Backing board measures approximately 29.25 inches high x 22.25 inches wide. If the item is not paid for within this time frame, an unpaid item case will be opened. More pictures available on request. Haku Maki Color Woodblock San Mon Ban 75-62 Melon No. 299/302 & Signed 6 X 6

On offer, we have a woodblock by Haku Maki. 75-62 San Mon Ban (Melon) has the artist’s stamp with pencil signed name, title and number 299/302. This small still life is full of detail including a pale yellow stem. Made in 1975, Maki produced a number of variations of the melon theme in his career. This measures 6″ X 6″ with the image 4″ X 4″. It is mounted at the top with tape on a 7 7/8″ X 7″ paper. This print was the 62nd design in the year of 1975, therefore part of the title is 75-62. This was a system he used until the 1980′s when he refined his numbering system. We believe this in excellent vintage condition. The print is bright, bold, clean and clear. There are faint pencil marks under the signature. It has been handled and has some light wrinkles. The plain paper mounting has Haku Maki written on both sides, but not by the artist. This is from my friend who collects everything and is starting to part with a few of his treasures.
