LARGE SUPERB LIMITED EDITION SIGNED JAPANESE WOODBLOCK PRINT BY IDO MASAO. GION CANAL UNDER SNOW. A Rare Early Scene by this Great Kyoto Artist Showing a Gorgeous Scene of Snow Falling on a Gion Canal and a very lucky find so it is offered at a fantastic low price. Dated 1988, Number 85/180 SIZE: 45.8cm x 31.8cm (18 inches x 12.4 inches). In Very Good Condition. MASAO IDO was born in North-East China in 1945 then moved to Japan in 1946 where he has lived ever since. He studied in Kyoto with Yoshida Koho and Otsubo Shigechika and by 1984 was a Teacher of Seiji Sano. Masao Ido is One of the Most Highly regarded of Contemporary Woodblock Artists and has Work in Many Museums including the New York Museum of Modern Art, the Boston Art Museum, the Kyoto and Tokyo National Museum and the Florence Municipal Museum. He has an extremely individual form of expression and an amazing skill with perspective and form. LARGE LIMITED EDITION SIGNED JAPANESE WOODBLOCK PRINT. MORNING LIGHT A COUNTRY HOUSE ON THE KISOKAIDO. This Large Limited Edition Japanese Woodblock Print is by Famous Artist Katsuyuki Nishijima. It is Signed and Numbered and is Titled. Katsuyuki Nishijima was born in 1945 in Yamaguchi Province of Japan. From 1964 to 1968 he studied the art of Woodblock Prints in the studio of the Mikumo publishing house in Kyoto as well as exhibiting his work with the Kyoto independent artists and in solo displays. From 1972 he focused his immense talents on limited edition woodblocks using traditional old buildings as his main subject matter. Katsuyuki Nishijima’s woodblocks come in a number of formats and the larger sizes are limited editions of usually 500, all hand signed, titled and numbered but normally never dated. He has also produced a number of open edition woodblocks since the mid 1970s which are hand signed and titled and again not dated. This listing is for a large c. 1960′s woodblock print by Jan (Junichiro) Sekino, of an interesting subject including Jesus on the cross in a city scene surrounded by newspaper print. It really gets your attention. The image dimensions are roughly 23″ x 23″. It has never been displayed. There are some wrinkles along the edges from storage. This is print 21 of 100. This print as well as my other Japanese prints all came from a Boston gallery that closed down over 20 years ago. Condition is good, has been stored in a tube for the last 25+ years. These are remarkable pieces of woodblock art, likely from the 1960s. They are hand signed and numbered by the artist. These are 2 very rare of his early woodblock prints from a limited series entitled “Remain”. Remain D is 2/20 and Remain B is 4/20. From what I can tell, they were in the original frame, glass. And matting, but I temporarily removed from the frame and glass for photos. Please contact me ahead of purchasing if you want to have the frames/glass included. What appears to be the original tape is still in place, at the top of each print only, connecting them to the matting. I took quite a few pictures to indicate the condition of the pieces. I don’t know enough about woodblock prints to know what type of restoration may be desired by a serious collector. I did my best to take helpful photos. Please send me a message and I will be more than happy to send you additional images. There are no tears but there is some discoloration of the paper that doesn’t distract from the beauty of the images to my untrained eye, but a serious collector may want to have restoration done. They are impressive examples measuring approximately 15″ x 24″ (image size), 21″ x 30″ (including matting) and 24″ x 33″ (with optional frames).
