Ikeda taught in the 1940s and 1950s before becoming a fulltime artist and printmaker. He was a member of several printmaking associations including Nihon Hanga Kyokai. Ikeda’s work is important collections worldwide. This print, typical of Ikeda’s style and technique, is signed lower right and numbered 35/100 and dated 64. It is inscribed in Japanese lower left. This woodblock print (from a limited edition of 250) is from The Second Collection of Modern Beauties (Gendai bijin shu dai-nishu). It is entitled Maiko girl. It was published by Watanabe with a date of July 12, 1932. It is signed and dated on the upper left. It has the Watanabe publisher seal on the lower left. The limited edition seal is on the verso. The paper measures 17″ x 11″. Framed dimensions are 24 7/16″ x 17 3/4″. There is also a “Shinsui” signature on the backing board, but we suspect this was added by the framer. Kaoru Kawano pencil signed print. Good to very good condition. There is one small spot on print near bottom of leg. The print should probably be re-matted, as there is discoloration and spotting to matte in the corners. I tried to capture this in the 4th picture. There is also some spotting to the frame edges. Signed in pencil lower left. Block Size-15″ x 10″. Kaoru Kawano was born in Otaru, Hokkaido in 1916, and studied at Kawabata art school in 1934. Because his earlier works showed such great promise, they were displayed at the Nihon Hanga Kyokai Exhibition (Japan Print Society) in 1944. He interrupted his print-making activities to join the army, but later was unfortunate to become a prisoner of war in Siberia. In 1949 he resumed exhibiting with Nihon Hanga Kyokai, and subsequently with Kokugakai in 1952. He moved to Tokyo in 1958, and participated in international competitions and solo exhibitions in New York, Seattle, Chicago, and elsewhere. His works are characterized by highly textured abstract representations of children.
