As seen in the photos, this woodblock print of a Kabuki actor is by one of the masters of the art form, Ichiyusai Kuniyoshi. The publisher’s seal and censor’s seals are documented on the rear tag, which also contains all of the vital information. “Lady in the Iris Garden” is from a set entitled “The Seven Good Luck Gods along Sumida River”. The piece is loosely affixed into a paper sleeve which also creates a simple matte window. The rear of the print bears black and red Japanese script, which I have not had translated. The informative tag on the rear of the sleeve claims authentication, though a COA is not present. This print measures 9.5″ x 14.125″ and has thankfully been stored flat for seemingly many decades. The colors are still vibrant, especially the teal of the plant life. There appears to be some moisture staining along the top edge of the print, which may require restoration or basic cleaning. This beautiful and mysterious work by Kuniyoshi is destined to become the centerpiece of any collection. This set of three is called “the friendly garden” and they are among Yoshida’s most desired woodblocks. Published, printed, and carved by Yoshida, the three pieces are individually titled “pine tree”, “bamboo tree”, and “plum tree”, and were produced from 19 hand carved blocks. All three are signed in pencil lower right, “Yoshida Toshi” in kanji. Each one is framed in its original teak frame, measuring 31″x16″. The prints themselves are in great condition but the frames and paper backs are worn. The paper back has some tears. Colors are bright with little to no fading. Frames have some wear. The silk matting has slight thread separation, but no major loss or damage. If you want to see more pictures let me know.
