Original woodblock prints by Hiroshige II (aka Ryusai) from the series of the Tokaido road, published/ printed between 1862 and 1867. The original set had 56 prints total. What : Original Japanese woodblock prints. Artist : Hiroshige II (2nd) aka Shigenobu (before apprenticeship) and Rissho (after divorcing Hiroshig’s daughter Otatsu). This series straddles his use of both names (Hiroshige and also Rissho), so some prints are signed each name. All prints were designed by the same artist. Number of sheets included : 45. Size : All sheets are Chuban size. Because of trimming on some sheets, I can’t give exact measurements for each print. Most are roughly 7.0″ x 9.50″ some will be slightly smaller or slightly larger (depending on trimming). Date of printing : This took several years to complete this series. Printing began in 1862 and finished in 1867. These prints are all from the original edition, made during the lifetime of Hiroshige II. Condition : Please check all images for condition, all sheets are pictured. These prints are in great overall condition. These were originally removed from a folding album. Some sheets have been trimmed in the margins and there is some thinning in some spots along the edges. All prints are UNBACKED (except for a single print). The single backed print was attached to the end page of the book, and it was damaged before I ever received the book. I provided images showing detail of that single print (the damaged print is the only image with a single sheet shown). I added backing to that print to hold the sheet together, as there were several tears and some small missing pieces. The photos are as follows. Every sheet is shown in the images provided. I have shown the backs of randomly selected sheets, so the condition can be seen of the unbacked sheets. Essentially they are all in a similar condition. A few of the sheets have extra paper remnants (from the original album backing) along the edges. Some sheets have small repairs, along the margins, which have been made from the back. All repairs were made using archival and acid- free document repair material. Some sheets have been trimmed along the margins. This item is in the category “Antiques\Asian Antiques\Japan\Prints”.
