HIROAKI SHOTEI TAKAHASHI, NIGHT SHOWER AT IZUMI BRIDGE, JAPANESE WOODBLOCK PRINT. THIS IS A CHIRIMEN (CREPE) PRINT WHICH MAKES IT MORE DURABLE. SHOTEI’S STAMP IS ON THE LEFT MIDDLE BUT DUE TO THE CREPE PROCESS AND THE DARK COLORING IT DID NOT SCAN WELL. THIS IS ONE OF SHOTEI’S MOST PRIZED IMAGES. IMPRESSION AND COLOR ARE VERY FINE. CORNERS ARE FRAYED AND THERE IS A PINHOLE IN LOWER LEFT CORNER. Print measures: 12.2 x 5.6 inches. Perfect color and condition! As rare a combination as they come. Seal in lower right corner. Provenance: From Ex-Navy Officer stationed in Yokohama 1946. Overall size: 15 -1/2 x 10 1/4. Narazaki writes:’This is a fine example of a Hasui snowscape. The primary reason for its success is the unusual composition, which depicts the Yakumo bridge from a lower vantage point. The slender pines are blanketed in a heavy snow. The passageway is faint and obscured by the snow, and it contrasts with the thick, boldly coloured vermilion railings in the foreground’.
