Woodblock Print : Utagawa Kunisada Toyokuni III : Kabuki Actor Onoe Kikugoro IV. Toyokuni III : Kabuki Actor Onoe Kikugoro IV. This is a lovely antique original print by Utagawa Kunisada, also known as Toyokuni III of a man, actor Onoe Kikugoro IV. Framed and matted under glass in a curved wood brown frame. Utagawa Kunisada (1786 – 12 January 1865), also known as Utagawa Toyokuni III, (Sandai Utagawa Toyokuni), was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist. He is considered the most popular, prolific and commercially successful designer of ukiyo-e woodblock prints in 19th-century Japan. In his own time, his reputation far exceeded that of his contemporaries, Hokusai, Hiroshige and Kuniyoshi. Condition: Good condition, some fading and minor stains and creases. Examined out of the frame. Framed and matted under glass. Frame is in good condition. Measurements: Framed: 20 3/4 x 16 1/4 x 1 inches; Print: 14 x 10 inches. Weight: 4 lbs 2 oz. The Frame Up gallery, Los Angeles, signed in ink on back. This is a lovely and very rare antique original print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi of a woman playing with a cat. Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798- 1861) was one of the last great masters of the Japanese ukiyo-e style of woodblock prints and painting. He was a member of the Utagawa school. The range of Kuniyoshi’s subjects included many genres: landscapes, women, Kabuki actors, cats, and mythical animals. He is known for depictions of the battles of legendary samurai heroes. His artwork incorporated aspects of Western representation in landscape painting and caricature. Condition: Very good condition. Colors are very fresh, mild fading and rubbing commensurate with age and use. Framed and matted under glass in fine black lacquer frame with metal corners. 20 3/4 x 16 3/4 x 1 inches; woodblock size: 14 1/2 x 10 1/2 inches. Weight: 4 lbs 15 oz. Offered for sale is a beautiful set of two antique woodblock prints by Ogata Korin. Each print depicts a group of people. The prints are nicely matted and framed in period bamboo style frames. Please see our other auctions for other rare collectible items, including another set of prints by this same maker! Here are the item details. Dimensions: 19.75 inches long and 11 1/8 inches wide overall. The sight is 13.75 inches by 5.5 inches. Markings: Please see the photos for the signatures. Condition: The prints appear to be in great condition. There is some cloudiness to what appears to the underside of the glass. If you hold them just right, you can see this. We didn’t want to unseal the frame to wipe the glass underneath. There is some wear to the paint on the wooden frames as would be expected from items of this age. Please see the photos for details. Tametomo in his island kingdom, seated on a rock, watching native women picking fruit and diving for awabi (abalone). This is a lovely and very rare antique original print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi women picking fruit by the sea. It is right sheet from triptych and comes with a stamped and hand written Certificate from Sekai. Please note that the last photo is for reference only, source: Kuniyoshi Project, 2024.
