Japanese art Woodblock Print /. Four Seasons Flowers and Birds. Whisper of Deep Autumn with signature by the artist. Published by IEI Art Gallery. He was a Japanese printmaking artist associated with the sosaku-hanga movement and son of shin-hanga artist Hiroshi Yoshida. From 1971 to 1994, until the last years of his life, Toshi worked almost exclusively on animal prints. Toshi was also a children’s book illustrator. He wrote his own short stories and made illustrations in the Animal Picture Book series. Outside dimensions: 21.5″ W x 13.7″ H / 54.7cm x 34.7cm. This particular woodblock dates to the late 1970s. It is signed by the artist, Toshi Yoshida, in English in pencil on the right bottom right margin and in Japanese within the image (with chop). The title of this piece is on the lower left hand margin. This abstract woodcut print (double oban) was created in 1968 by Toshi Yoshida. It is signed, numbered (37/200) and titled in pencil by the artist. The image measures 19 1/2 x 14 1/8 with the paper being 21 3/4 x 16. The print is in fine condition with water-based tape at the corner margins – there is no toning or foxing. At an early age he absorbed the techniques of old-style woodblock printing from the artisans in his father’s studio. The death of Hiroshi in 1950 marked Toshi’s total (but not permanent) break from his past and naturalism. In 1953, Toshi traveled to the United States, Mexico, London and the near East. He made presentations in thirty museums and galleries in eighteen states. From 1954 to 1973, Toshi made three hundred nonobjective prints.
