Utagawa Hiroshige (1797 – 1858) (Ando) Japanese Woodblock Print Fuchu: The Abe River, circa 1833 – 1834 Series; Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido (The Great Tokaido) This is an original Edo period woodblock print; ink and color on old fibrous paper. Image Size: 8 3/4″ x 13 1/2″ Signed: Hiroshige Subject: Travellers Fording the Abe River at Fuchu. PUBLISHER: The character, which can be read take (bamboo), is seen within a circle on the back of the green garment in the figure farthest to the right. It is one of the logos of the publisher of this series. Condition is very good, there is some very light fading in particular the yellow of the canopy and hats. The paper is in good condition with only very light marks – no damage. The top right corner edge has a small fold crease, please see the detail in the pictures. The image can also be seen through the reverse of the paper as shown leaving a light impression on the protective board, characteristics of age. Utagawa Hiroshige (1797 – 1858) (Ando) Japanese Woodblock Print YOKKAICHI: Mie River, circa 1833 – 1834 Series; Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido (The Great Tokaido) This is an original Edo period woodblock print; ink and color on hand made paper made of fibres. Image Size: 8 3/4″ x 13 1/2″ Signed: Hiroshige ga Format: Oban. Subject: The Hurricane A man racing after his hat, bowled along by the wind with his coat blown about him. In the first edition copies the man’s coat is shaded in colour. PUBLISHER: Takenouchi Magobei – Hoeido / Hoyeido Hoeido are the first edition of the Tokaido series by Hiroshige. Condition is very good, there is some light fading of colour, in particular the red. The paper is in good condition with some very light yellowing. There are few impressed marks below the calligraphy, please see the detail in the pictures. No tears or damage. The print was framed and stored and the perimeter age marks of the mount can be seen, the print can also be seen through the reverse of the paper as shown and there is also an impression of the picture on the frame backing board. 11 WOODBLOCK PRINTS! 1967 Toshi Yoshida Varieties of the Japanese Print SIGNED

A beautiful handmade book: Varieties of the Japanese Prints by Toshi Yoshida published in 1967. The book contains 11 (12 depending on your definition of finished) mid-century abstract prints by Yoshida. Plus several pages of the different states needed to produce a finished, multi-colored print. In some instances, Yoshida demonstrated how the colors were layered, so there are actually 20 hand printed pages. NO pages are missing. This is Volume 1. No further volumes were ever produced. Signed in English and in Japanese characters on the title page. Condition is quite good. The prints remain bright. No tears or stains. The handmade cover however is slightly worn and the spine is missing material at both the top and bottom. The front hinge is broken; the book is held together by its original cord. Now protected with a mylar wrapper. Missing the original slipcase. Still, for all that, a fine and beautiful thing at a reasonable price. Size is approximately 8 by 8 1/2 inches.
