Very fine woodblock print “Raicho” (Japanese Rock Ptarmigan) is by Toshi Yoshida. HAND SIGNED “Toshi Yoshida” by artist and titled “Raicho “on the bottom margin. “Showa 5 nen saku” (Printed 1930) and Japanese title “Raicho” in kanji lettering on the left margin. English title and artist signature on the bottom margin is hand-written (not block signed) in pencil by the artist. The rock ptarmigan (Lagopus muta) is a medium-sized gamebird in the grouse family. In Japan, it is known as the raicho, which means “Thunderbird”. It is the official bird of Gifu, Nagano, and Toyama Prefectures and is a protected species nationwide. Technique: Woodblock Paper size: 16 x 10 and 7/8 inches Image size: 14 and 7/8 x 9 and 3/4 inches Date: 1930 Signed: Pencil-signed “Toshi Yoshida” by the artist on the bottom margin. It is signed Toshi Yoshida in English in pencil on the bottom right margin and in Japanese within the image (with chop). Toshi Yoshida created the piece in 1940. It depicts a quiet scene in this rural locale with beautiful, traditional houses along the river in Matsumoto, which is acclaimed for its beautiful views. Mountains in the distance tower in the mist – a wonderful scene that transports the viewer to another place and time. Image Size – 6 5/8″ x 9 3/8″. With Signature Margin, Mat & Frame.
