HERES A SIGNED ORIGINAL VINTAGE 1950S MODERN MIDCENTURY JAPANESE COLOR WOODBLOCK PRINT BY MASAHARU AOYAMA (1893 – 1969) DISPLAYING A WATCHFUL OWL PERCHED HIGH UP AMONG THE PINE TREES AND LOOKING DOWNWARD PRESUMABLY AT ITS PREY WHILE A FLOCK OF GEESE ARE FLYING BY IN THE DISTANCE! The dimensions of the color woodblock print that can be viewed within the matt board are sixteen inches (16) in height by eleven inches (11) in width. Presumably, the dimensions of the woodblock print continue underneath the matt board. The overall dimensions of the original wooden frame are approximately twenty two and one quarter inches (22 1/4) in height by seventeen and one half inches (17 1/2) in width. Pencil signed in the lower right corner M. Aoyama along with Aoyama’s red seal located in the bottom left corner. Also, Please Note: This Masaharu Aoyama color woodblock print was acquired from an important estate in Carmel, California. The estate had been owned by a well-known collector of Asian art and design. To this end, there is a small inventory number attached to the front side bottom edge of the wooden frame. Condition: This Masaharu Aoyama color woodblock print itself looks to be in very nice and clean condition. But please pay attention — there are a number of age-related grime spots on the inside surface of the glass covering the print and the only way to clean them off is to remove the print and the sheet of glass from its original backing (which has never been done). Also, the original wooden frame has some small scuffs that show up as “red” areas but these are small and unobtrusive. And the original paper backing is still intact but does have punctures, tears, and small age spotting. Again, the Masaharu Aoyama color woodblock print itself looks to be in very nice and clean condition! Aoyama Masaharu (Seiji), born in Saitama prefecture studied traditional ink painting at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts. Following his studies he took a position at the Imperial Household Museum, which he kept until his early retirement in 1936. Aoyama exhibited his ink paintings in the official state controlled Teiten events, an equivalent of the French Salon. He produced his first prints in the 1920s. Some self-carved and self-printed (jizuri) some published with cooperation of Ishiyama publishing agency, are in close relation with the modern manner of the Sosaku Hanga movement. Aoyamas favorite subjects were kachoga, images of birds, flowers and small animals. LASTLY, SHOULD THE WORD “EAMES” BE USED IN THE SEARCH TITLE, IT IS THERE FOR THE PURPOSE OF REFERENCING THE MID-CENTURY TIME PERIOD OF THE 1940S THROUGH THE 1970S. 14 THIS ITEM IS BEING OFFERED BY DESIGN REFERENCES — ESTABLISHED BY A FORMER ART MUSEUM CURATOR TURNED BOOKSELLER SPECIALIZING in OUT-OF-PRINT and PERIOD MATERIALS on the PROGRESSIVE IDEAS of MODERNISM and POST-MODERNISM in DECORATIVE ARTS and ARCHITECTURE, INDUSTRIAL and STUDIO ARTS of the 19TH & 20TH CENTURIES. 15 PLEASE — NO REQUESTS FOR PHOTOCOPIES OF THIS ITEM. Please Note: This original Kaoru Kawano color woodblock print still retains its original frame, matting board, and the reverse side paper backing. It looks as though it has never been removed. The image size is approximately fourteen and three quarters inches (14 ¾) in height by nine inches (9) in width. Because this Kawano color woodblock print still retains all of its original matting and framing, it cannot be easily accessed to obtain the dimensions for prints sheet size. However, according to the website for Ohmi Gallery, the format for this particular color woodblock print is known as Oban and the sheet size measures approximately sixteen and three quarters inches (16 ¾) in height by eleven and one half inches (11 ½) in width. To this end, the dimensions of the woodblock print continue underneath the matt board. The overall dimensions of the original black-painted wooden frame are approximately twenty three and one eighth inches (23 1/8) in height by a little over fifteen and one half inches (15 1/2) in width. Signed in pencil in the top left corner Kaoru Kawano along with Kawanos red seal. Condition: This Kaoru Kawano color woodblock print looks to be in excellent and clean condition — absolutely beautiful! The original matting and the reverse side paper backing are also in excellent and clean condition. The original black-painted wooden frame has some small white scuffs and markings on its front side surface areas but is generally very good and clean! And the original paper backing does have a few small punctures located in one area. Provenance: This Kaoru Kawano color woodblock print was recently acquired from an important estate in Carmel, California. Kaoru Kawano was born 1918 in Hokkaido, Japan, and studied at the Kawabata Art School beginning in 1934. He had his first prints accepted by the Japan Print Association in 1944. By the 1950s he began to exhibit more frequently in shows around the world. None of his prints, not even his (apparently early) limited edition prints, are dated. Kawano made effective use of woodgrain patterns for both the background and the body of his subjects, which provide depth and texture. This use of plywood surface textures was characteristic of the works of many’sosaku hanga’ artists. Sosaku hanga’ artists took pride in cutting the blocks and printing their own works. This is in contrast to’shin hanga’ artists who continued to collaborate with professional block cutters and printers. Signed Japanese Wood Block Print Kiyoshi Saito “Village Scene with Pagoda”. 20 1/2″ x 15″. Kiyoshi Sait (, Sait Kiyoshi, April 27, 1907 November 14, 1997, born in Aizubange, Fukushima) was a ssaku-hanga artist in 20th-century Japan. In 1938, he issued his first prints in his now famous “Winter in Aizu” series. Sait was one of the first Japanese printmaking artists to have won at the São Paulo Biennale in 1951. Sait’s early works depict villages populated with local Japanese with a high degree of realism and three-dimensionality. His more mature works merge modern elements with Japanese tradition. His prints feature architecture and plant life flattened in two-dimensionality. He spent time in Paris, and did a series there. Kiyoshi Saitos woodblock prints titled Autumn are considered extremely rare and valuable. We consider All Sales to be Final. For your consideration: a rare vintage mid-century (1966) Artist Proof woodblock woodcut by noted Japanese artist Fumio Fujita, depicting abstract motifs (sails) in a round cartouche. One of Japan’s most well-known contemporary sosaku hanga artists, Fumio Fujita, born 1933, studied at the Musashino College of Fine Arts and started creating woodblock prints in 1963. Fujitas prints are all pencil signed and numbered, limited editions. His works have been included in the prestigious Collage Women’s Association of Japan (CWAJ) exhibitions several times. Fujitas works are becoming increasing collectable, especially some of his earlier designs. Fujita 1966 AP (Artist Proof) with with additional Japanese characters Dimensions: The print is 17 1/2″ tall and 13 1/2″ wide. Condition: Excellent vintage condition some minimal signs of wear, mostly to the frame. There are some tiny impurities between the print and the frame, but the print is unstained. The artist: Fumio Fujita was born in Aichi province in 1933. He graduated in 1955 from the renowned Musashino College of Fine Arts. In 1963 Fumio Fujita began to make woodblock prints in moku hanga style – self-carved and self-printed. His main subjects are landscapes with a focus on trees. This subject has become trendy among Japanese printmakers since another artist, Joichi Hoshi, became famous by making practically nothing else but images of trees. Fumio Fujita exhibits regularly with “Kokugakai”, a Japanese printmaker association. He had several solo shows in Tokyo and exhibits every now and then with the prestigious CWAJ print shows (College Women of Japan), which was established by Oliver Statler after world war II. Was born in Japan in 1933 and studied at the Musashino College of Fine Arts and began creating woodblock prints in 1963. He has always tried to maintain a type of minimalist style within the landscape genre, has been very successful and is one of the few present day artists to have been contracted by a major Japanese woodblock publisher at the same time as retaining his independence and so continuing to create woodblocks prints himself.
