This listing is for the original framed woodblock print that you see in the photos. A note on the reverse indicates that it it was framed in 1968. The frame measures close to 20 3/8 by 6 inches. The print measures close to 14 1/4 by 3 1/2 inches. The framed print weighs close to 1 pound 4.6 ounces. The print appears to be glued to some kind of white background. I have not examined it out of the frame. Please be aware that the print is behind glass and that there are many reflections in the photos. The condition is much like you see it in the photos. There are three brownish spots of discoloration at the top of the print that I imagine were caused by glue. Otherwise, the print appears to be in excellent condition with no damage. There are some tiny specks of white on the frame that look like missing finish. The narrow inner lining on the frame shows some light signs of use. The paper backing on the frame is a little damaged. The frame could benefit from a little cleaning. Otherwise, this item is fine and as shown. My photos should give you a good idea of its general condition. I guarantee this print to be as described and represented by the 12 photos after the general description. The photos are part of the description. Please look at all of them. Please know that the lighting in my photos is uneven and that there might be shadows or reflections. The colors on my monitor look close to but not exactly like the actual colors. Different monitors may show different colors. I often say that an item measures or weighs “close to” because in my opinion no measurements are exact and some things are difficult to measure. Often, I have a double wall box custom made for larger items and that might result in a short delay. When I use packing peanuts, they are usually biodegradable. Sometimes, I use used boxes. 12 photos should load with this listing. This item is in the category “Antiques\Asian Antiques\Japan\Prints”. The seller is “foundfeeling” and is located in this country: US.

Shoda Koho Moonlit Sea antique Japanese Woodblock Print
Author: adminApr 11
One of the quietest and most pensive of Hasegawa’s Night Series, and one of my favorites (named the company for it). A lonely fishing boat plies the water on a calm, cloudless, full-moon evening. The viewer is on the shore, taking in the scene behind some river reeds. This is an early edition printing of Moonlit Sea judging by the thin margins, paper, and coloring. Rich, even color, good bleed-through to the verso. Yellow accents to the moon and reflection in the water. Thinning on the top margin from where it was tacked to backing. Almost imperceptible 1cm tear in the upper right corner from weak paper. This movement was influenced by European Impressionism and its imagery focused on landscapes, women, and nature. Boats, Fishing, Night, Solitude. The item “Shoda Koho Moonlit Sea antique Japanese Woodblock Print” is in sale since Friday, April 9, 2021. SHODA KOHO Ueno Park (rare chirimen-gami-e) antique Japanese woodblock print
Author: adminNov 14
A parent and small child carrying a lantern take in the city lights by night at Ueno Park in Tokyo. Ueno Park is a spacious public park in the Tokyo, Japan. Established in 1873 on lands formerly belonging to the temple of Kan’ei-ji, it is one of Japan’s first public parks, founded a year after Yellowstone National Park was established as the first national park in the United States. Ueno Park is celebrated in spring for its cherry blossoms and hanami festivals. In this woodblock Shoda Koho captures the scene of a parent and child taking in the cityscape by night, reflected in the waterways of the park, with a crescent moon hanging in the sky. This specific piece is a variation of the woodblock included in Hasegawa’s Night Scenes. This woodblock is printed in the chirimen-gami-e technique and has a slightly different composition than the print included in the Series (pictured here). Ueno Park by Shoda Koho. The version of Ueno Park by Shoda Koho typically included in Hasegawa’s Night Scenes. Chirimen-gami-e or chirimengami-e (“compressed thread paper prints”) were crinkled paper prints or “crepe/crepon” prints. Ukiyo-e crepe prints were produced at least as early as 1800 in Edo and were used on occasion for alternate states of some ukiyo-e designs. The compression technique resulted in a highly textured surface and noticeably smaller paper sizes, which offered a different aesthetic from the image printed in standard editions. A noticeable side effect of the technique is the retained richness and vibrancy of the colors. Despite the extra effort involved in making these prints, they were, it seems, more a novelty than an attempt at serious refinement of the printed image. There was a revival of chirimen-gami-e production in the 1880s with the advent of crepe-paper books to satisfy a growing Western market. As seen by comparing the two images, the composition has been modified. The trees on the left are in a different order, the child has switched sides with the adult, the skyline is different, and the coloring is significantly enhanced in the chirimen-gami-e version. This woodblock print by Shoda Koho is in pristine condition. The colors are very rich without any blemishes on the plate. In the bottom right margin is an ink smudge that we’ve seen on other identical prints, leading us to believe that it was a result of the printing process (such as removing the print from the plate or the inking itself). Solid bleed-through of the ink into the verso. A tiny bit of residual paper in the top corners from where the print was likely tipped onto a folio or board for sale. Regarding the size, as mentioned this technique shrinks the image; whereas the normal image was most likely Chuban-sized (7×10″), the resulting print is approximately 6.5″x8.5. This movement was influenced by European Impressionism and its imagery focused on landscapes, women, and nature. SHODA KOHO Lake Biwa at Night rare sepia antique Japanese woodblock print
Author: adminNov 3
Depicts a beautiful silhouetted night scene of Lake Biwa at Night, a pair of fishermen in a boat peparating to row out. Shoda Koho was a Japanese artist associated with the shin-hanga (New Prints) art movement in Japan during the early 20th century. This movement was influenced by European Impressionism and its imagery focused on landscapes, women, and nature. In the 1920s, the publisher Hasegawa commissioned a small group of artists to create woodblock prints for a series entitled Hasegawas Night Scenes, of which there were a total of 21 prints by 6 artists. Please see images for condition. This is an early state version of Lake Biwa at Night by Shoda Koho in the rare SEPIA printing. The print has “Made in Japan” stamp on the verso. The paper is brittle; when it was removed from the frame pieces were cracked and lost. Tape residue on the top verso. Toning around the edges of the print. 10 × 7 in. SHODA KOHO Ohashi Bridge at Atako antique Japanese woodblock print
Author: adminOct 30
Depicts a beautiful silhouetted night scene on Ohashi Bridge, lantern-lit by the vendor and travelers on the bridge. In the distance there is the silhouette of a lone boat on the water, and a far off lantern-lit village skyline. Sudden Shower over Shin-hashi Bridge and Atake (hashi Atake no ydachi), from the series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo (Meisho Edo hyakkei) by Utagawa Hiroshige. This composition, entitled Ohashi Bridge at Atako, is one of the more classical compositions of the series, harkening back 70+ years to the works of Ukiyo-e artist Utagawa Hiroshige. While the Shin-hanga movement was influenced by European Impressionism, it can be said that market forces played a part here. Hiroshiges work was well known and sought after in both the domestic market as well as the export market, so its possible that Hasegawa, in commissioning the pieces for the series, sought a balance of new and old styles. The print for sale here is in what can only be described as original condition. The print itself is an early edition, as exemplified by its thin margins (but not trimmed) and its inclusion in the pencil-signed mat. Solid bleed-through of the printing, and rich colors without any fading, foxing, or other discoloration. This is remarkable in that it is in the original mat which, in our experience, has often led to minor acid damage to the prints or fading where the mat covered part of the image. Vintage Night Scenes series. Skillful bokashi shading, highly detailed. 10 × 7 in. The item “SHODA KOHO Ohashi Bridge at Atako antique Japanese woodblock print” is in sale since Thursday, October 29, 2020. This item is in the category “Antiques\Asian Antiques\Japan\Prints”.
