Beautiful Original Joichi Hoshi Woodblock Print. Signed and dated 1978. Outside wood frame measures 16 1/2″ wide by 13 3/4″ high. Internal silver frame is 11 1/2″ wide and 8 7/8″ high. Total depth is roughly 1 1/4. Woodblock behind glass within silver frame is roughly 7 5/8″ wide and 5 1/4″ high. Overall condition of print is excellent with no signs of wear. Frame shows some wear – please see pictures for more details. Backing has original green paper. Price includes very careful packing within the continental US. Sagami Jiro Taira Masakado taken by an arrow from Yoshitoshi’s Courageous Warriors c. Original circa 188 3 Japanese Woodblock Print by Yoshitoshi, guaranteed! A masterpiece of action and color, this image moves beyond the two-dimensional space. Unarguably the best design of the series. The daimyo Sagami Jiro Taira Masakado started a rebellion against the Fujiwara shogunate in 930 A. However, his rebellion was short-lived. He was eventually killed by an arrow launched by shoguns famed archer Fujiwara Hidesato. In this dynamic scene, Sagami JiroTaira Masakado riding his horse is trampling a samurai while unbeknownst to him an arrow is about to take his life. His horse literally jumps out of the page. The sense of frozen action is masterfully conveyed. The horse and fallen samurai are suspended in mid-air with broken pieces of sword flying in different directions. The fatal arrow pierces the scene across the series cartouche just inches away from striking! This print is from the very first printing of this series. Mica dust is applied to the black sky. Dark and fine gradation of color creates a moody and dark scene. Even the horses body exhibits attention to color range by delineating muscles. The Daimyos black jacket is burnished and shines. It measures 13 ¾ x 9 ½ inches. It is in great condition with very slight stains. It is slightly trimmed. The dark line extending upward at the bottom is part of printing process for this image. It is there in other prints with this image including one in the Tokyo National Museum collection. Woodblock print in horizontal oban format, sealed Hiroshi, pencil signed Hiroshi Yoshida, with a jizuri seal (printed by the artist), dated Showa 10 (1935). 24.7cm high x 37.5cm wide (excluding print). Print is only lightly mounted to its backing along the top edge and could easily be removed. Framed – 55cm long x 40cm wide. Frame backing carries M. Nakazawa, Tokyo dealer’s label, who cites 1940 as the printing date. Dimension: image (18.2 x 25 cm or 8 3/12 x 9 7/8 inch), paper (22 x 27.8 cm or 8 5/8 x 11 inch). Credits: Kunihiro Amano (original artist, self-cut, self-print, self-published). Special Notes: Artist pencil initialed and signed in English at bottom left, titled. And dated (1958.7). This very interesting Amano Woodblock print is in excellent condition i. Clear and clean image, strong and bright paper, vivid colors, no bend, no tear, and slight but even age toning. Ample photos [front, back, and details] in high resolution are provided for your convenience of identification and judging its excellent quality independently. Flaws to note: there is a tiny water stain spot at top right in the margin (no affecting image) as shown by the detailed photos. 1929 was a highly skilled and well known Japanese Sosaku (generally self-cut and self-printed especially early in his career, such as the current print) artist (see the cited reference below for details) who started to issue woodblock prints in the 1950s. This current print was quite rare and was one his better ones (in terms of creativity etc). Please note the modest asking price. With no reserve for this very nice and highly displayable collectors item. Will be seriously considered. Not a later copy or reproduction and as described. This print is an epitome of beauty and violence! The design is a testimony to Yoshitoshis genius of capturing the moment either before or after a violent act. The scene from a Kabuki play depicts the moment the evil priest Dainin is about to take Umegaes life. He turns away to see a cuckoo take flight, perhaps an allegory of the transience of life. The flying handkerchief to the right of the image adds to the notion of a fleeting moment. The three-color cartouche, visible wood grain in the dark sky, and mica dust all indicate an early impression. It measures 14 x 18 ¼ inches and is in good condition. The print is slightly trimmed on sides. It is backed by thin paper for album mounting. Theres a rubbed spot on priests cheek.
