OHARA KOSON, ANTIQUE ORIGINAL JAPANESE WOODBLOCK PRINT, ROOSTER AND TWO CHICKS. A fine antique early 20th Century Japanese woodblock print. Depicting a Rooster and two chicks fighting over a butterfly. The print is framed and glazed within a simple black wood frame. Ref: K38.3 in Crows, Cranes and Camellias: The Natural World of Ohara Koson, Reigle/Newland. Koson (aka Shoson or Hoson) was born in Kanazawa with the given name Matao Ohara. He began his artistic career studying painting under the Shijo-style master Kason. Around the turn of the century, Koson became a teacher at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, where he met Ernest Fenollosa, an American collector, scholar and admirer of Japanese art and culture. Around 1905, Koson started to practice Japanese block printing. Fenollosa, the curator of Japanese Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and an adviser to the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo, persuaded Koson to export woodblock prints to American art collectors. Between 1900 and 1912 Koson created mainly. (bird-and-flower pictures), with his earliest and most coveted designs are notable for their narrow formats and soft colours. Mounted: 35.3 cm x 20 cm or 14 inches x 7 7/8 inches. The print is in good condition, retaining strong colours, cleanly framed in a sympathetic black wood frame. OHARA KOSON, SCARCE ANTIQUE ORIGINAL JAPANESE WOODBLOCK PRINT, HARE & FULL MOON. A scarce antique early 20th Century Japanese woodblock print. Depicting a white hare on his hind legs, with a full moon above appearing from behind the clouds. The print is framed and glazed within a simple black wood frame. Ref: K41.16, plate 102, in Crows, Cranes and Camellias: The Natural World of Ohara Koson, Reigle/Newland. Koson (aka Shoson or Hoson) was born in Kanazawa with the given name Matao Ohara. Parade Antiques and Collectables. Ohara Koson Japanese Woodblock Print Jay Yellow Sky. A rare Japanese woodblock print of a jay by Ohara Koson, dating from the early 20th century. The print depicts a Japanese Jay, swooping beneath a branch of ivy leaves. Halfway down, on the right side of the print, the signature and seal of Ohara Koson can be seen. He was of the Shin-Hanga or’New Prints’ movement, which revived the Japanese traditions of collaboration between, artist, carver, printer and publisher. It came about as an alternative to the’creative prints’ movement, which held that the artist should carve, print and publish their own works. He later became affiliated to the eminent publisher Watanabe Shozaburo, helping to sell his works across the world, particularly in North America. The print is in reasonable condition for its age, though there are small tears to the paper in the bottom and top, left-hand corners.
