Kiyoshi Sait (green abstract) boxed set 12 woodblock printed cards'50s INV1910

Kiyoshi Sait boxed set of 12 woodblock printed cards by circa 1950s. Dimensions: each card measures 4 5/8 x 3 1/2 inches. Condition: pristine with original box. Medium: boxed set of mini woodblock prints presented as cards with envelopes. The numbered images include. 1 Haniwa, ancient pots. 3 Winter in Aizu. 4 Temple of Moss, Kyoto. 6 At an Indian Village, New Mexico. 7 Aizu in Winter. Pictured are 12 early small-format woodblock (embossing apparent) prints by the famous Japanese woodblock print artist Kiyoshi Sait. Each woodblock print was made in the form of a gift card and includes a matching envelope. Each is printed on good quality Japanese washi paper, and includes a title and scene number. They are not posthumous restrikes, but lifetime editions. Kiyoshi Sait 1907 – 1997 was a ssaku hanga artist in 20th-century Japan. In 1938, he issued his first prints in his now famous “Winter in Aizu” series. Saito was one of the first Japanese printmaking artists to have won at the São Paulo Biennale in 1951. Sait’s early works depict villages populated with local Japanese with a high degree of realism and three-dimensionality. His more mature works merge modern elements with Japanese tradition. His prints feature architecture and plant life flattened in two-dimensionality. These are unowned sets, which come from the residual inventory from a bookstore/gallery which operated in Manhattan 1940s-1970s. As such, all cards are in mint condition. In rare instances, a card may have minor creasing, none of which affects the imagery. Provenance: From the residual estate inventory of The Golden Griffin Gallery/Arts Inc. Operated in New York City, New York from the 1950s to the 1970s. In the mid 1940s, Arts, Inc. Was established as a publishing house specializing in European scholarly and artistic works. In the 1950s, Arts, Inc. The parent company, expanded to create, first, the Golden Griffin Bookstore and then the Griffin Gallery, which dealt primarily with contemporary American and European artists. The Golden Griffin was known as the Continental Bookstore because of its stock of European titles. Japanese artist known for his woodblocks, design and paintings. Original signed and stamped limited edition woodblock print. Image: 15.5″x 9.5″ Frame: 22.25″x 16″. Signed and stamped lower left. Looks excellent, in as found original condition, no visible wear, fading or damage, does not appear laid down, not examined out of the frame–please look at photos carefully. Great looking composition by Kiyoshi Saito! With brilliant contrast, this image depicts a stylized portrait of a Japanese female figure carrying a large bundle. Saito was known for his woodblocks and traditional Japanese subjects; this is a fine example of his work in beautiful condition. Born in Fukushima prefecture, Kiyoshi Saito began by designing signs for store fronts in 1924 and developed his work it into a successful business. His love of art inspired him to sell his business and move to Tokyo in 1932. There he studied Western-style painting at the Hongo Painting Institute. While exhibiting his oils, he begun making woodblock prints (Hanga) by cutting and printing progressively from a single block. By 1937 he focused on only making woodblock prints and in 1938 he produced the Winter in Aizu series depicting the area where he lived as a child. In 1943, he met Onchi, which led to membership in the Nihon Hanga Kyokai (Japanese woodblock association). At the end of the war he exhibited with Un-ichi Hiratsuka and Hide Kawanishe in Tokyo. In 1948, he exhibited at the Salon Printemps, and in 1951 received first prize for Steady Gaze at the inaugural Sao Paolo Bienniale. This event brought the modern school of Japanese prints to prominence. Saito was featured in Statler’s, Modern Japanese Print: An Art Reborn (1956), and visited the U. In 1956 under the auspices of the State Department and the Asia Foundation. From that year onward, Saito exhibited widely throughout the U. In 1967 he made a woodblock print of Prime Minister Eisaku Sato for the cover of Time Magazine. In his later years he moved on to figure subjects then to Buddist subjects and the building and culture of Kyoto, influenced by the works of Mondrian. Saito’s prints, with their flat areas of color and solid textures were the result of his search for the essentials of nature. Saito died in 1997 at the conclusion of a major retrospective in Tokyo at the Wako Department Store. Kiyoshi Saito works are in numerous collections including: Cincinnati Art Museum, Philadelphia Museum of Art; Achenbach Foundation for the Graphic Arts, San Francisco; New York Public Library; Art Institute of Chicago; Fukushima Prefectural Museum of Art; Kanagawa Prefectural Museum. 100% Guaranteed to be as described.
