Kaoru Kawano Girl with Bird Japanese Woodblock Signed Listed Artist

Signed in pencil lower left. Block Size-15″ x 10″; Frame- 21″ x 15″. Kaoru Kawano was born in Otaru, Hokkaido in 1916, and studied at Kawabata art school in 1934. Because his earlier works showed such great promise, they were displayed at the Nihon Hanga Kyokai Exhibition (Japan Print Society) in 1944. He interrupted his print-making activities to join the army, but later was unfortunate to become a prisoner of war in Siberia. In 1949 he resumed exhibiting with Nihon Hanga Kyokai, and subsequently with Kokugakai in 1952. He moved to Tokyo in 1958, and participated in international competitions and solo exhibitions in New York, Seattle, Chicago, and elsewhere. His works are characterized by highly textured abstract representations of children. Kaoru Kawano Mandarin Ducks 1960s Pencil Signed Japanese Color Woodblock

Kaoru Kawano studied at Kawabata art school in 1934. He exhibited at the Japan Print Society as early as 1944 but his career was interrupted by the war (he was a POW in Siberia). He resumed his career following the war, participating in numerous Japanese and international exhibitions. Noted for his semi-abstract images of women and children, Kawano was one of the few Japanese printmakers to design, carve, and publish his own prints. This print of swimming ducks is signed in pencil and bears Kawano’s seal lower right. The print measures 9 1/4″ x 14 7/8″ (image size). It is in good condition with mat burn in the margins and some toning of the paper. Framed and matted as shown. Please see my other auctions for more fine paintings and prints. Hand signed in pencil at lower left. Print has not been examined out of the frame but appears to be in very good condition in the original mat and frame. The frame has some scuffs and nicks – some that can be touched up and some that were poorly touched up by the previous owner. Please note: the black color of the print background is quite vibrant in person – photographing the black background makes it appear washed out, but I can assure you that is not the case when viewed in person.
