Junichiro Sekino Japanese Woodblock Print Kiyomizu Temple in Kyoto Pagoda Snow
Author: adminSep 25
This listing is for the original Japanese woodblock print that you see in the photos. One source of information tells me that the title is “Kiyomizu Temple in Kyoto” from the Tokaido Road series that is also known as: “Pagoda in Snow, ” or Snowy Forest. It is signed in pencil. The frame measures close to 26 ¾ by 21 ½ inches. The area of the print paper exposed by the frame measures close to 19 ¼ by 13 ¾ inches. The area of the image measures close to 12 5/8 by 17 7/8 inches. The framed print weighs close to 6 pounds 2 ounces. The print is behind glass so you might see some reflections. The condition is much like you see it in the photos. As far as I can see, the print is in excellent condition with no damage. There are some rolling distortions of the paper across the top of the paper exposed by the mat. I have provided a photo of them where they are maximally apparent because I have them angled to a light. Otherwise, they are not particularly noticeable. There is a minor scrape on the frame that I have provided a close-up of. The paper backing on the frame is damaged some. Otherwise, print and frame are fine and as shown. My photos should give you a good idea of their general condition. I guarantee this print to be as described and represented by the 11 photos after the general description. The photos are part of the description. Please look at all of them. Please know that the lighting in my photos is uneven and that there might be shadows or reflections. The colors on my monitor look close to but not exactly like the actual colors. Different monitors may show different colors. I often say that an item measures or weighs “close to” because in my opinion no measurements are exact and some things are difficult to measure. Often, I have a double wall box custom made for larger items and that might result in a short delay. When I use packing peanuts, they are usually biodegradable. Sometimes, I use used boxes. 11 photos should load with this listing. This item is in the category “Antiques\Asian Antiques\Japan\Prints”. Junichiro Sekino Signed Original Woodblock Print Hakone Rare w Sun Rays Framed
Author: adminJul 1
Original woodblock print by Junichiro Sekino titled: Hakone: Mt. Fuji Over the Lake. This print is from the series Fifty Three Stations of the Tkaid , 1975. The print is signed in pencil at lower right by the artist and includes the artist’s seal. I was told this is the “brighter” version (with sun rays) of this work, which is also harder to find. This version of the print is in the permanent collection of Art Gallery of Greater Victoria in Canada. The print has not been examined outside of its frame, but it appears to be in very good condition with no fading, stains, tears, etc. It is matted under non reflective glass and housed in a gold faux bamboo frame. The visible area measures 12.5″ by 17.5″ and the frame measures 18″ by 23″. Artist’s bio below is from Wikipedia. Please send me any questions. Sekino Jun’ichir (Japanese: , born 1914 1988) was a Japanese woodblock printer, one of the major postwar artists of the sosaku hanga (“creative print”) movement. Sekino Jun’ichir was born in 1914 in the Yasukata district of Aomori, Aomori Prefecture, in northern Japan. From a young age he immersed himself in the study of printmaking. In middle school he started a magazine Ryokuju-mu (“Dream of Green Foliage”) devoted to poetry and print. Sekino studied at Nishida Takeo’s Japanese Etching Institute and enrolled at private school to learn oil painting and drawing. From 1931 he studied intaglio printmaking and lithography under Kon Junz who considered his pupil an artistic genius. In 1935 Sekino submitted an etching of Aomori harbor to a government sponsored Teiten exhibition and won a first prize. Later the same year he was awarded a prize for print exhibited at the Nihon Hanga Kyokai (Japanese Print Association). He joined the Nihon Hanga Kyokai in 1938, and the Kokugakai (National Picture Association) in 1940. In April 1939 Sekino moved to Tokyo where he was employed by publisher Shimo Taro and met Kshir Onchi. He was one of the founding members of Onchi’s Ichimokukai (First Thursday Society), where he was considered Onchi’s right-hand man. During the Second World War, Sekino procured lodging and theater facilities for entertainment troupes. Through this role he met famous kabuki actor Nakamura Kichiemon I whose woodblock portrait he produced in 1947. Alongside further depictions of artists such as Shik Munakata and Onchi, it became one of his most renowned pieces, and established him as the country’s pre-eminent woodblock portraitist. Besides portraits, Sekino produced still lifes, landscapes (both rural scenes and cityscapes), depictions of animals, and abstract works. He also worked in lithography and etching, and in 1953 founded the Japanese Etchers Society. In 1958, at the invitation of the Japan Society, Sekino taught at America’s Pratt Institute. In 1963 Gordon Gilkey of the Oregon State University hired him to teach a class. He also taught at the University of Washington and worked in New Mexico at the Tamarind Studio where he studied with Glen Alps, the inventor of collography. Sekino was influenced by German Renaissance artist Albrecht Dürer and stated that, one of the things I like most about him is his thoroughness, his corner-to-corner completeness. Sekino created over 400 prints. His years of studying printmaking techniques enabled him to produce work of a consistent and extremely high quality, in excess of most of his contemporary sosaku hanga artists. Onchi honoured him in allowing Sekino to reprint his Portrait of Hagiwara Sakutaro, and he assisted Maekawa Senpan in his Hot Spring Notes series. As well as the Fifty-Three Stations, Sekino created series such as: Old Capital, Prints of the Narrow Road to the Deep North, Collection of Aomori Folk Toys and Collection of Famous Japan Folk Toys. He contributed to Onchi’s 1945 series Scenes of Last Tokyo (Tokyo kaiko zue).
