ORIGINAL FIRST EDITION SCENES FROM YOSHITOSHIS FAMOUS SERIES 100 ASPECTS OF THE MOON PUBLISHED BY AKIYAMA BUEMON OVER THE PERIOD 1885 to 1892. SIGNATURE: Yoshitoshi with Y oshitoshi Red Seal in bottom right of scene. SIZE: 35.5cm x 24.5cm (14 inches x 10 inches) DATE: August 1891 OTHER ATTRIBUTES: NUMBER 98 in the Series of 100 with The Artists Signature and Red Seal in Lower Right of the Scene and Full Authentication Date and Publishers Seals in Left Margin. TAISO YOSHITOSHI lived from 1839 until 1892 and is considered to be one of the greatest artists of the Meiji era. He was a student of Kuniyoshi along with Yoshiiku and, even though he was considered the greater talent, when Kuniyoshi died, he was named the heir apparent to the school. Along with Yoshiiku there were hard times until the release of his most famous and most sought after series the 100 Aspects of the Moon was released and this series about beautiful women and ghosts is still thought to be one of the truly great woodblock print series ever created. Unfortunately his great creative ability and talent had a dark side as he suffered for depression and mental illness and he died of a brain hemorrhage at the age of only 53. Shimmachi Bridge at Hodogaya” #5 and. #54”The Running Well Teahouse” by Utagawa Hiroshige from the series Fifty three stations of the Tokaido (Hoeido Tokaido) These are Meiji period hand colored woodblock prints, original design by Utagawa Hiroshige 1833, on hand made paper size approx 223 x 349 mm. Whilst not created within the lifetime of Hiroshige, these are good e arly impressions printed C late 1800′s early/20th century. A cquired by the previous owner in Japan in the 1920′s. The paper is hand made but is thicker compared to early Edo period prints, it has a similar appearance to. Isn’t as fine as Gampi. If earlier prints interest you take a look at some of the originals I have for sale here, copy and paste the listing numbers into the search bar. Signs of wear commensurate with Antique, overall very good condition. In this same format these prints are on display at some of the worlds most prominent Museums including the Edo Tokyo Museum, Honolulu Museum, and the University of Winsconsin. Antique Japanese Woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi Meiji Era Nine-Tailed Fox

This is an antique Japanese Woodblock Print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798 – 1861) depicting the Defeat of the Evil Nine-tailed Fox on Nasu Moor in the Shimotsuke Province. This Wood Block print is a Triptych with three separate wood block prints forming one picture. The woodblock print appears old, and was folded horizontally across all three woodblock prints prior to being framed. Each pieces has a fold mark horizontally, shown in close up in the last picture, pointed out by red arrows. This woodblock Tryptych is framed in a nice solid metal frame, with protective glass cover. The frame measures 36″ by 20″. The three woodblock prints alone measure 29 1/2″ by 14″. Was one of the last great masters of the Japanese Ukiyo-e style of woodblock prints and painting. He was a member of the Utagawa School. The range of Kuniyoshi’s subjects included many genres: landscapes, beautiful women, Kabuki actors, cats, and mythical animals. He is known for depictions of the battles of legendary samurai heroes. Most of the items I sell are estate finds, and are presented to you in, as is, as found condition. They are described to the best of my knowledge. Some wear is to be expected, unless described as flawless or mint.
