“Daibutsu Temple Gate”, a 1940 Woodblock by Hiroshi Yoshida. A piece overseen by Yoshida himself, featuring the Jizuri seal! Daibutsu Temple Gate, a later woodblock by the shin-hanga artist, was completed in 1940, and features a charming street scene outside a the Daibutsu Temple, where people co-mingle with nature. This piece, which comes framed and matted in its original frame, features the Jizuri seal. For a collector of Yoshida’s works, this is one of the most important attributes of a piece. This mark in graphite, on the middle lefthand margin, denotes that this woodblock was directly overseen by Yoshida himself, which ensures that the print is of the highest quality. Later and posthumous prints, which there are many, do not poses this seal. This work is signed and titled in pencil on the lower margin. The piece is also signed Yoshida in ink with the Hiroshi seal within the plate. This piece is in EXCELLENT condition! The woodblock itself shows very few signs of age. The frame has some surface wear, which, I feel, adds to the allure of the piece. Framed dimensions: 15 in by 20½ in; 5/8 in thick. Plate dimensions: 9¾ by 14¾ in (does not include signatures or title in margins). Your item will come from a pet and smoke-free home.
