Japan Edo Illustrated book of flora HONZO ZUFU Color Woodblock print book Vol. HONZO ZUFU (lit The Illustrated Book of Herbalism) Vol. 27: Vine plants (Unlike the modern classification) About 32 pages of fine woodcut printing illustrated encyclopedia. Overall the excellent preservation state far beyond the standard. Therefore, the contents are exactly the same as the 1912 version, but neither the colophon nor the title slip. Iwasaki kanen, the author of this book, was a samurai of shogunate retainer, a man who studied plants for a lifetime. Issuance of the first edition of this book, which was one of the first full-fledged botanical books based on Herbalism in Japan, began in 1830. After that, when the first 6 books were issued in woodcut printing, the funds were depleted, and the subsequent volumes were distributed as manuscripts of reserved production. Distribution of 92 books was complete in 1828, and honzo-zufu was completed. According to the records, the total number of reservations is only 30 sets, and the first edition of this book is almost impossible to obtain. This 1922 version is the whole volume of Honzo-zufu completed by woodcut printing after more than 100 years since the first publishing, and the printing of this book which reproduced perfectly up to delicate neutral colors is highly appreciated. The classification of plants in this book is based on the Chinese herbology book (Compendium of Materia Medica), which Kanen used for reference.
