Colour Woodblock Print on Paper, dated 1973, signed in pencil in both English and Japanese characters, number 42 from a limited edition of 100. A charming and strikingly graphic image of two children, presumably on their way to or from school, walking up a deserted village street between traditional thatched buildings, towards an astonishingly blue sky above blue-green mountains. Born in Shizuoka, Japan in 1939, Unno Mitsuhiro was mostly self-taught. Before becoming an artist he had graduated from the Shizuoka Business High School. He became an associate member of the Nihon Hanga Kykai (Japan Print Association) in 1969. His very promising career was cut short by his untimely death in 1979. His subjects include un-idealized representations of Japanese country life. Many of his prints are characterized by his use of colours, particularly blocks of vivid colour contrasting with deep black. His work is widely collected and admired. The print is mounted and framed in what I assume is the original brown wooden frame. The area within the mount measures 35 cm x 27.5 cm (13.3/4 x 10 3/4 inches) and the frame measures 52.5 cm x 40 cm 20 3/4 x 15 3/4 inches. Condition is good for age. The margins are a little grubby and there are some scratches and scrapes to the frame. The colours are strong throughout and there is no visible foxing. Please note I have not removed the print from the frame. If you have any questions about this print please don’t hesitate to ask.
