This is an original ukiyoe (wood block print) by the Meiji Era artist, Chikanobu. The subject matter is of a beijinga. Classic beauties of the day. With her escort in a snow storm. On the right side of the print (see picture 4) is the name of the artist, as well as, the date of the print (Meiji 22nd year – 1889). In the upper right hand corner (see picture 5) are the Japanese words (fubuki or “snow storm”). Chikanobu was from the Utagawa school which was the dominate school of wood block printing throughout the late Edo and Meiji eras. This print is oban sized 9 1/2″ x 15″ (24 x 35 cm). The last two pictures show the typical bleed through of the dyes during the printing process of an ukiyoe. The paper this print is made of took over 200 days to make and is made of the inner bark of the gampi (mulberry) tree and made to last virtually indefinitely. Having been kept in a bound collection, this print remains in very fine condition.
